Actually, it's not stealing in this context. The Bibles are donated by Gideon Bible International. They actually want you to take them to spread the word. They would however like you to send them a check to pay for it, plus a little more to pay for more.

They are pushed on the hotels by the Gideons. They aren't owned by the hotels, so you can do whatever you want with them.
Personally, I just like annotating them to point out some of the more problematic parts of the Bible. If someone's actually going to read the thing, I'd like to get them thinking, too.

It is the most stolen book in history.
As to stealing it it is wrong and it does belong to the hotel. Is it ok to steal a coat from the needy if it was donated to them?

stealing is stealing. no matter what the object is. If it isnt yours, and you take it anyways, its stealing. Dont try and justify it just because you know it was a donation. Why not go to your local good will store and steal from them also. All that stuff was free to them also. Get my point.

"Thou shalt not steal." ~ the Bible
I don't know whether the Bibles in hotel rooms are supposed to be removed or not. I thought they were left there so they could be read during the person's stay.
If I wanted the Bible that badly, I would ask if I could have it rather than assuming I could just take it.

LOL... Why would you want a King James Version? It is in archaic English (1600's).
Buy or borrow one that is just as accurate, and is in today's language (NIV, NLT, NASB...ask your bookstore, they all carry them, as does WalMart).
