Have a 1yr old daschund. He uses the bathroom outside but every now and then he gets a brain cramp. He will use the bathroom in the house two or three times and then he goes back to using the bathroom outside. I've read they are very stubborn and like to mark their territory especially if there are other dogs around. We have a female with a new litter. How can I stop him from going in doors permanently?

I agree with the new puppies in the house, your daschund is marking his territory. Use an enzyme cleaner, Nature's Miracle is the best, and clean thoroughly everywhere he has gone potty. Make sure his scent is completely gone. You may not smell it, but he can..Clean it a few times, especially rugs. The scent goes to the padding, and needs to be clean too. Yes, they are stubborn, and you need to be very consistent in taking him out often. You can also try "belly bands". They make them for smaller dogs to cover their little "winkie" to protect your floors, beds, carpets, clothes etc. They usually don't pee in them, but if they do, make an annoyed fuss at the wet pad, and let him know you do not like WHAT HE DID..not the dog..put a new pad in them and put them back on. When they are dry when you take them off, make a big fuss over the dog...give him lots of lovings and perhaps a treat. They may be stubborn, but they are also smart..and he will soon learn what makes you happy. That's all he really wants. Attention and your happiness.

keep puppies in a separate room. is your dog neutered? if not then i would absolutely do that. they become less territorial since there will be a serious drop in testosterone. if your dog is already neutered, then i would suggest treats when the dog does "potty" outside. when he does "potty" inside, take him outside immediately. this may take a while. my mother has a boston terrier, which are also quite stubborn,(1yr 8mos) just now starting to get it.as soon as my mother thought of this trick, the dog started doing much better.

you answered your own question; a new litter; as a male he is establishing his dominance by scent; that is what animals do; his wife? is now occupied elsewhere and all those puppies what is a poor 1 yr old puppy to do when he feels the crunch of hey remember me - spend some extra time and attention on him and be patient; he has feelings too! You let his environment change and now wonder why he is making adjustments.

For three to four weeks set an alarm and take your dog outside to the garden every hour.

If you persist with this your dog will eventually do his business outside all the time.

On the hour every hour for a month. Wether your dog wants it or not. I assure you this will work...........all the best.
