Should I use an I beam. If so what size?

Assuming simple end support, and the point load in the middle of the span, your channels will fail instantly. They provide 1/8 of the necessary strength.

Is there a maximum deflection in this application? You are looking at the least a W12 x 22. This is for planning purposes only. Contact an engineer for a final selection.

There is more to this than simply sizing a beam or channel. End conitions, lateral support, etc. Contact local engineer.

ROUGHLY, a standard 9" I beam or 2 8" channels back to back.
