1) It will depend on the dog whether or not they will keep them on. Some dogs actually seem to like wearing things...others, do not. So, try out an old sweatshirt before you spend money on a new, better fitting dog shirt. You can tie a knot in the shirt along the bottom hem. I would do this on the dogs back versus belly to help prevent them from peeing on the shirt. Also you may need to cut the sleeves to make it so that they don't drag through the ground and get wet. If the shirt gets wet...then it won't do anything to help keep the dog warm...it will actually make it worse.

2) Anyone who thinks that dogs/cats/any other animal does not need to be protected from the elements is sadly mistaken. Yes, dogs have fur; but it depends on the breed on how much fur and protection they have. Not all dogs are "made" for cold weather. A husky obviously has the protection and wouldn't need anything extra. They have fur that grows to protect their paws, they have a double coat of fur that give a weather resistant layer and a warm downy underlayer. However short haired dogs like Pitt Bulls DO NOT have any natural protection. Their fur is short and only single layered. Their paws are bare and contact the cold snow and ice just like you would contact the cold if you walked outside barefoot.

3) Depending on how cold it is, you may need to bring you dog in doors...this would be in temperatures around 0 degrees Farenheit. (Usually the local news stations talk about this when the temperatures dip this low).

i tried to make a sweat shirt for my whippet. it turned out horrible so unless you are good at sewing, i would just buy a new one. whippets are hard to fit but we found a parka for him yesterday, i still had to make adjustments. he's warm and stylish now!
