A civilian is under civil law. That is the U.S. Constitution, the statutes of whatever state you reside in, and any local ordinances. Military personnel are under the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice). They take an oath the the Constitution, and unlike politicians, they are expected to take that oath seriously.
Generally, a civilian has more rights than a military person. There are a few instances where the person in uniform is less encumbered than his civilian counterpart. The civilian in a place like New York City may have trouble exercising his Right to Keep and Bear Arms, yet, if he were in the military, he might be issued an automatic rifle or a machine gun.
Obviously, military discipline is a lot different than civilian authority. In the military, you are expected to obey all orders, other than illegal orders.

The differance is the military runs the goverment which means very little personal freedom. Civilian rule is where the people say who runs the goverment. You may not have some freedoms but more then under military rule

The big difference is when things have deterioated so far as to require military rule. Not much is said if the arresting officer doesn't fire a warning shot before they aim for center mass. The ACLU (or equivilant) is told to shut up and sit down.

Military has less rights and more rights to violate and can be court martialed for damn near anything. also can be disciplined for damn near anything where civilians cannot..also military is in a round about way subjected to double punishment ex: gets a DWI in local community and goes to civilian court, looses lic. pays fine etc etc..then the military can get him for conduct unbecoming for that offense and put him/her out of the military..there is a host of reasons. If you look at the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) it will scare you..My opinion retired GI.
