Once upon a time, there was a piece of fresh fruit; for the sake of the story, let's call him "Peach," as that is one of my favorite fruits. He was full of water and life! Then he was picked and sent off to the fruit drying plant, where he was not only sucked dry of his water content, but he was also given sulfur dioxide to keep him from degrading and pumped with corn syrup to make him sweeter than sweet. He was packed tightly into a bag with a whole lot of other dried peaches, all of whom had had the same sulfur treatment. He read the word on the package (for he was unusually gifted at reading things backwards), "natural fruit treat, 0% Trans fat!" Peach thought to himself of the irony of it all, as he sat stewing in his sulfrous space--how unnatural he felt for an all-natural treat....

P.S. You did say you wanted a story! :D

My aunt used to buy me dried cranberries and up to these date, i'd kill for them.
But you should visit an Oriental deli someday. its like dried fruit wonderland.

One of my favorites is the one called fruit jewel candy (it definitely has a chinese/japanese name but I'm dont remember). Its a dollop of this hardened sugar crystal caramel that is studded with one dried salty plum fruit, like an amber crystal with a rock half buried in it. The salt and sugar flows from these two different parts of the treat so you have a salt/sweet war in your mouth. Some people don't like em but the people I know who does, like me, can keep at it for hours, sometimes recognizin' that their mouths are comfortable and cravin for 'em.

Its a treat for the patient because its hard candy.

I used to like banana chips too until I bit down hard on one and cracked a tooth resulting in a root canal. Now my favourite are dried apricots. Much softer on the teeth and safer. :)

I like to poach dried apricots in red wine with a clove, some pepper and cinnamon. Then I serve them with vanilla ice cream.

My grandmother has a macaw and he like just about everything she gives him. He loves bananas. He like just about any type of fruit but oranges and he has to be in the mood for apples. The only thing I can say is try different fruits and veggies and see what your bird likes. They are all different just like people.

Mangoes all the way. I used to have a $7/day habit. Now that I'm in South Africa, it's only $2/day.
