Baby Einstien is cute, but it's also very controversial in the early childhood development/brain science community because it hypnotically makes the kid focus on the television and fosters over-visual stimulation. I used it for my son (who's five now), but depending on what publications the mother may have been reading, she might not appreciate it so much.
A better gift for a one year old would be something that has a good amount of red, white and black on it and something that the kid can touch and play with - preferably textural and easy to get his limited motor skills hands on - something he can slap! lol
If you're really stuck, go to a store like Noodle Kidoodle or any other learning-based childrens' toy stores and look for something that will involve the kids developing motor skills - something that fosters action or touch - not spectatorship, like a video.
Also, don't be afraid to buy a gift that's a bit older - something from fisher-price that they can lay down in and kick or touch and make sounds. There's a good chance the kid's not going to pay any attention to it right away, anyway. He might cling to a beat up teddy bear or stuffed rabbit like mine did! But don't worry; One thing about kids is that they grow!
Good luck and don't sweat it too much. Your friend will appreciate it anyway. props for caring - my wife needs more friends like you

I gifted my 1yr neice a full set of laminated books with pictures of everything vegetables, fruits, Alphabets and numbers. She has now learnt a lot, and by far that has been the most useful gift. hmmmm, she also likes the tricycle and the 3feet long toy car.
