A bottle of Scotch

Depends on if you know the person well or not. I agree with the other posts, wine and chocolate always good. Plus flowers if the host is a woman or has a female significant other.

If the host has kids it may be an idea to get them a little something too/instead for example a book or small toy/game

You can always ask if there is anything you can bring. Sometimes the host/hostess may be stressing about some detail like ice or drinks, and you can give them a hand. If they say 'nothing', a bottle of wine (or if you know something that the host really enjoys~ chocolate, tea, gift basket, beer, cigars, etc.) shows your appreciation for their efforts.

I can't tell if you're a woman or a man, but as a woman, I just went to a friends pre Christmas Luncheon and took her a gift bag filled with bath salt, bubble bath, lotion, pillow sache, and some assorted teas. If you're a man that may not look right!! lol ;o)
In that case I suggest flowers or poinsettias.

I would call the host and see if there's anything they need you to bring, a side dish, salad, appetizer, dessert, etc. If they say they've got it covered, I suggest wine or a Christmasy scented candle (unless they're sensitive to smells). Fancy cheese or chocolate is always acceptable too. I love getting those chocolate oranges!

ok..I must not be reading your question right because as a hostess I would want nothing..I would just want my friends there for the fun of a get-together and some silly time during the rush of everything else going on. But..you have been given some lovely suggestions, so go with those!

Alcohol (preferably wine or something classy if it's the first time to one of their parties, and they are not close friends. If they are close, take any alcohol you know will go down well).

Chocs

Flowers if it's a female

Otherwise just whatever you were going to give them for Xmas, if you were going to give them something!

You have already gotten some great ideas. You may also consider a Christmas tree ornament keepsake. Those are always nice, especially before Christmas.

Wine is a generally acceptable gift for such an occasion.
