Status epilepticus is a condition in which a seizure is constant and does not resolve spontaneously or there are sequential, back-to-back seizures that don't allow time for the body to recover. It is a medical emergency and requires hospitalization. The treatment is usually benzodiazepenes (the drug class that Valium is in) or Barbiturates. If myoclonus (constant tight contraction of the muslces) is present, you may need to give paralytic drugs to prevent rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which muscle tissue dies and releases myoglobin into the bloodstream. This can precipitate in the kidneys and cause kidney failure. The patient will require intubation and to be placed on a ventilator for this, as these drugs paralyze the diaphragm in addition to other muscles.

Neurologists are the specialists that treat this problem typically unless there is a surgical explanation in which case a neurosurgeon may be involved in their care.
