Actually i have bought this cam two weeks ago. I am facing few problems in its handling. 1) When i asked my vendor why all of a sudden the camera goes off and lense remained in open position, he replied "its battery (AA Cell) probelm, i should charge it perfectly". I purchased another four cells of higher of mah capacity thinking that may be i was using light mah cell but it did not help. 2) I have purchased one g.b. sony "high speed" memory stick but due to cell problem could not succeed to see its result. I have read somewhere that i would be needed an adaptor for using 1 gb stick.

The S500 should take around 60 shots with regular batteries or up to 350 with NiMH rechargables.
And Memory Stick (Pro) Duo cards up to 4GB should work like a charm.
If your camera isn't living up to that, something's wrong - try to exchange it.
