Two ways - depends on whether you want to go to the north or the south of cali?
If you want to go to san deigo - surfing maybe? then take 1-80 and go towards las vegas, just keep on keeping on - get a map, obviously, but you can pretty much follow the signs. las vegas is a good place to spend the night then continue the next day through baker and then to san diego.
if you want san fransisco or north california then go towards wendover, then onto reno - spend the night there, it is grim but get a room in a hotel and leave early the next morning, you could even stop at lake tahoe for interest sake.
it is easy but stay over in nevada or you will be very tired.

leave Utah hit Wendover for a few drinks, this will put you in a Vegas state of mind. Cruise through to Reno, stay over night. Leave as early as possible after one steak breakfast and a bloody mary. Head on to Vegas, park at the Palms for three days....party 'til you puke. You'll for get all about California. If at this point your not cured get on the 15 south and follow the signs.
