Islam means submission. Adam was the first muslim, because he submitted. Islam didn't just start during Muhammad's (peace be upon him) times. Truly monotheistic christians of the past, and Jews of the past, are all considered to be those who submitted, hence they were Muslims as well.

Pre-Islamic Arabia was devastating and shockingly deficient and so was the rest of the world more or less. Ghulam Sarwar said: ‘The religions of the Jews and Christians at the time were so corrupted that they no longer had any appeal to the reason and wisdom’. Arabia at that time was being dismantled at the time by sinners and it was getting worse everyday. People were undedicated and uncivilized Muslims worshiped idols, trees, stones but not God. Adultery, gambling, fighting etc was wide spread as Jafar Qasimi stated: “Gradually the entire region suffered a terrible deprivation of the monotheistic tradition and san into the age of ignorance.” People in Arabia suffered from deficient acts and all they had was the worldly temptations. The main economy was trade and even that was coming to a disaster due to the fact that the Al-Hums made by Hashim was not being followed and so some tribes become wealthier than others. There would be fights between clans and there was no equality in wealth, nothing was working to help as people were ignorant and selfish. Women had a lower status and were treated bad also Mawdudi stated: “daughters would be killed if the father didn’t have a son in law” women didn’t have any rights and were seen as a disgrace to society.
If you look at Arabia from the geographical side of view it is in the centre of the world as Mawdudi said: “Situated right in the middle of Asia and Europe”. So if there would be any place in the world that could set an example and make a difference to the rest of the world it would be Arabia. Mekkah and Medina at the time were famous as Mekkah was famous for trade and the Kabah as Medina is famous for the agriculture. People from all over the world would travel to Mekkah to trade with the protection of the Al-Hums. This meant that Mekkah was a multi-cultural society including people with different races and faith. The Kabah stored all the religious idols and in the area where the Kabah is fighting was not permissible because the Al-Hums prevented this.
The Days of Jahiliya devastated the whole world as people would do what they pleased and absorbed the worldly temptations. Knowledgeable people were not even educated to an acceptable degree as Mawdudi stated: “A noble man in those days is equivalent to a man on the streets today”. Women were being abused and daughter was being killed by their fathers as Mawdudi said: “Daughters would be killed if the father didn’t have a son in law”. Women where not seen as equal but at a very low level.
Al-Hums were not being practiced upon and so some tribes become wealthier than others. Certain tribes become wealthier and stronger as other’s become weaker and poorer. There needed to be a change or else peace and justice wouldn’t exist. There would be a chance of women becoming instinct and war against the rest of the world. Tribes would terrorise other tribes until there is non left.
This is why I think that Arabia was ready to change, Islam and Allah was needed to be placed back into their hearts. There needed to be one person to set an example and educate the people, This person is the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who brought light into hearts of those that followed him.

pre-Islamic arabia was a pagan society that treated its women as either whores or mules.
"Before the Islam came to Mecca, women were either prayed to or preyed upon." -Bilal by HAL Craig
there were many women gods but this did not give women any respect.
each god had a specific residence in a city, and that was the city's source of revenue. this is one of the reasons that many of the people, especially higher in society, were opposed to the idea of a omnipotent omnipresent God.
also, the Prophet taught that "all were equal before God as the teeth of the comb." and freed slaves which was a large threat to arabian culture and economy
peace and blessings to all,
Sakina
ps although there may have been Christians and Jews in other areas in the region.... Mecca was a pagan society thats livelihood was defined by its religion...... there were actually 365 gods in the religion of the pre-Islamic arabs. and unlike most societies that have ever existed, they did not believe in ANY kind of afterlife

Islam was introduced to the Arabs. So before Islam, the Arabs were living in tribes without much law and order. The women's status was much worse before Islam. Islam was introduced to uphold goodness.
Before Islam, the Arab tribal people worshipped 3 deities, which I forgot the names.

Islam, just like Christianity, started as an offshoot of Hebrew. All three faiths are considered Abrahamic or from Abraham.
