Look on the registration document - the V5. If they can't produce one, don't buy the car.

If you can get to see the V5 it will show who the current owner is, and the previous owner to that.
If you can't get to see the V5, don't buy, simple as that.

have a carfax run prior to purchasing the vehicle. if you purchase from a dealership you can have them run this and it will tell you if it was a private party, dealership, rental facility, etc. they can also do a title search on the title prior to the sale, or you can have this done after you purchase the vehicle.
