The best place to look for others with the same surname is in the GENFORUM. Also, the keywords "FAMILY " at the search line of Yahoo, will bring up tons of web sites for people with the surname you entered at the search. Ellis Island web site is good - but that will just show you when people immigrated here. Family Search is also good, if you are looking for ancestors. ZABASearch is great for the USA, and White Pages is too. For other countries, search on the Country name with the words "White Pages". Even DNA Projects on Family Search use the Same Surname concept.
This will optimize your search for the Surname, then you can focus on the first name.
