There isn't a BEST dog to own, all are different and unique in their own ways and it depends on your own tastes and preferences, I like all types of dogs from the wee dogs such as Westies to the larger breed of dog such as a St Bernard, all dogs are wonderful creatures to answer that question for me would be impossible, of course people are going to be biased and say the breed of dog they or a relative own but you can't really pick.

The best dog to own is one that's right for your lifestyle. Look into different breeds or even a mixed breed and find out which one best suites you. You need to think of things such as the size of the place you live in and the size of the dog, how much exercise the dog is going to need and how much time you have, how long the breed of the dogs life span is, what kind of health issues the breed you like have and so on. There are many great books out there on dog breeds, a lot of websites and your local human society should be able to help you as well. One breed may be great for one person's lifestyle but not so good for yours. Check into it and good luck.

My favorite breed is a Newfoundland, which is a huge dog with a long black coat. They are very loving dogs with lots of energy. However, because they are SO big, you need lots of space (generally in the country) for them to run around.

Otherwise, I think a dog from the pound is great. You save a dog from euthanasia, generally you get to pick a dog that is mostly grown or full grown, so you know it's personality. Non-purebred dogs are generally healthier genetically, which means less cost for you in the long run. Further, you get the benefit of a friend for life that wouldn't have a chance otherwise!

the breed doesn't matter; there are great mixed breed dogs the same as purebreed; the best dog is the one that its owner took the time to train from day one; no bad dogs just owners who didn't invest time and effort when a puppy so they can have a great adult dog; take any puppy and give him a kind, consistent, patient trainer and you have the best dog to own!!!

I studied this question for days before deciding on the breed of dog we now own:

Simply - A dog that pratically house trains itself. Makes a wonderful pet and family member. Can protect the home and owners. Has a wonderful look and powerful frame. Has great character and the ability to think for itself.

The best dog to own in my opinion - THE JAPANESE AKITA

I have had a german shepard and a labrador b4 and my dad has 2 pug dogs but the best dog I have every had is my dog bear he is a rottweiler,
So obediant so good with the kids very intelligent, never lets me out of his sight when were out walking, and extremely loving and playfull,
But I suppose it all depends on you, do you want a hyperactive dog who always wants fun constantly or do you want one who is a bit dozy and just wants to cuddle, try going to a dog shelter and seeing if you bond with any of them.

The best dog to own is whichever dog you like, that suits both you and your lifestyle, I love German Shepherds and have kept them for many, many years, but I have also owned many mongrels and love the fact that you never quite know how they are going to turn out.

All breeds can be good, so I won't know but some are more expensive than others and big and small so depends on the individual.

I would love a perfect dog of mainly any breed as long as they have a bit of intellegence and can walk on or off a lead and also do their doggy mess outside. lol

A Labrador is a very loving and affectionate dog. They love to please their owners. I have a Labrador and a Siberian Husky and grew up with Boxers. They are all good dogs if you are looking for a medium to large size breed. I would suggest that you only get a bigger dog if you have a large yard for them to run around in and a larger vehicle to transport them around in.

A dog that fits your lifestyle. Try not to be 'breed-specific' when deciding on a pet. Find a dog who's energy level is in-tune with yours. Please be open to adoption. You are saving a life! Remember every dog needs at least 45 minutes of walking everyday!
