If you mean how to prevent the dog from getting rabies - the best way is to bring it to a vet and have the vet give it the series of shots, and then go back yearly for the booster.
If you live in Connecticut, you are required to do this by law. I believe most states in the US have similar requirements.

If you mean to prevent a dog from getting rabid: vaccinate!
He should be getting other important shots anyways, like: distemper, adenovirus, maybe bordetella, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, coronavirus and lyme disease.
If you meant to prevent some dog's rabies itself (like on yourself or another pet), just don't get close to the animal that might be infected.
Rabies is fatal.
Once bitten or exposed to it (like saliva going inside a cut), if there's no immediate care (shots), especially once the symptoms show up (usually 2 to 12 weeks), it will be too late.

No longer can you by the rabies shots at the feed store, one has to go to a license vet and get it from them.
Keep your dog in your yard and try to keep the wild critters out, such as the raccoon. Good luck those boogers are crafty!

get a rabies shot and don't let it "play" with raccoons or other non vaccinated mammals (only mammals get rabies)
