Whether there is traffic or you are dead on familiar and comfortable with the area, you definitely want to plan to get to the airport by 6am. So you may need to leave your house no later than 4:30. Otherwise, if you have a friend or can find a cheap hotel in the area to insure you are there on time and this lessens the anxiety.

The 50 mile part can be tricky. Are you fliying out of an international airport, like JFK? Cause then you have to factor in city traffic/parking. But let's say you're flying out of a smaller one like Charleston, WV (CWR) well then traffic should be much easier because of the area. The 50 mile part depends on where you live.
If you're flying inside the US, it's a good idea to be at the ticket counter 1.5 hours before your flight leave. If you're leaving the country, try to be there at least 2 hours prior.
You have to remember that there are new security rules with TSA, so that may hold things up. AND security is always slow during the holidays with all of the extra travelers.
So do what you have to do to get you to the airport that's 50 miles away that will have you arriving at the ticket counter 1.5 -2 hours early.

your options are planes, trains and automobiles.
Planes are probably out because there's probably not a connecting flight that early in the morning.
Trains are fine if it goes right to the terminal and you know it to be usually on time.
I would feel better going by car. Or if there is an airport bus, that's even better because the bus driver would know all the detours and you don't have to park.

leave home 5 - 6 hours ahead of time and spare 1.5 - 2 hours on the road. You should arrive airport 3 hours ahead to avoid any problems on new security measures. Sound OK for you?

first thing i need to know is what airport you are travelling from? if its international you will need to be there 2 hours before the plane leaves so where ever you live allow enough time to get to the airport with time to spare
