It might be an idea if one person speaks to her in the language she has already learned and another only speaks to her in English/Hindi then she'll quickly become bilingual. It is a lot easier for children to learn languages whilst they are young.

I think you're right in your thinking, but be careful...

It's true she WILL catch up on English & Hindi in school. Thankfully, she starts school when she's still a kindergartener/elementary schooler, and this is still young enough to learn a language without an accent. Therefore, she WILL catch up and learn all three languages fluently in the long run. Knowing three languages will certainly help her excel beyond her peers - in the long run.

I say "long run" so often, because in the short run, is where her trouble may lie. Her first several years of primary school she may struggle and be placed in a language program (if your local schools are anything like mine), therefore missing out on other lessons her classmates experience. But this is not certain and it's only a "short term" outcome.

Just be prepared for the possiblity of the "shorm term" outcome, and don't be too upset when you hear she needs special English/Hindi lessos in primary school. I would continue doing what you are doing, because it's to her benefit many many years later.

If she will be speaking English in school, expose her to as much of it as possible. Children's programs on television help, as do books in English (you should be reading age-appropriate books to her already). You'll want her to be able to keep up with the other kids when she starts school.
I always recommended having the parent who speaks English the best should talk with the child solely in English. The other parent is to speak only Hindi. Parents should speak to each other in both languages. You need to be sure you don't mix Hindi words and English words in the same sentence; that will confuse your child.

The bare basic answers to the question "what's that?" when the saw me getting tampons out of my bathroom cabinet came at age 6 or so. Since that time, it's been an open dialog with my oldest two (who are 7 and 5.5). Questions like "why do you have bigger boobs than me?" "Why do you have hair on your legs?" "What are you doing to your armpits?" My answers are along the lines of "These are things that happen when you get older. At some point you'll get armpit hair that you'll want to shave, grow leg hair, grow boobs, etc. In addition to this, you also get your period. It means you are able to have a baby." Sometimes they ask "what's a period" sometimes it's over their heads. It's a normal bodily function, and nothing to be ashamed of or hidden.

I would talk to her in both languages. Children do not get confused with this, they actually can differeriniate sounds between languages. It is easier to learn languages under the age of 5, but if she is consistently be talked to or hearing more then one language now, she'll be even better off.

she will pick up m.tongue easily, as that is the language she hears. but it would be better if you teach her few things in english so that when she starts school she will not have initial hiccups.
as lot of schools in metros start off in english.

I think you are right. I think that you should talk in both, but if she sticks to JUST ONE LANGUAGE get the "Muzzy" tapes for English. They are very easy to learn from especially for little kids. I speak other languages because of it.

at this very age, they loves imitating adults action. If she speaks in ur mother tongue language, u could interpret her in English. Encourage each time she does it... Sing some simple rhymes or songs to her... She might be able to catch up as soon as she grow up.. till then enjoy urself with ur gorgeous doll!!!

I would speak to her in both languages and she will grow up to be bi-lingual. What an advantage you will be giving her.
