Be born black, have no respect for the English language, and a bad attitude. Then refine your style.

After that, you'll need equipment (you can buy a powered mixer that comes with speakers for about a grand, less for lower quality, and less still if you can find it used. I recommend Sennheiser microphones, but that's a matter of taste).

Get yourself a DJ, or create your own background music (Slick Rick, for example).

If you've already done all this, great. If not, do it. Then start playing parties, and later, clubs.

Once you have built up a following, start sending promo-packs (demo CD, sample logo , concert tickets, maybe even a video) to agents and talent scouts.

Invite other rappers you respect to your shows, and send them tickets... maybe even invite them to perform on-stage with you as guest appearances.

After all of that, hope for the best.

1. Practice your songwriting...all the great MCs have lyrical dexterity and the ability to tell a story, undertsnd that you lose the audience after 10 minutes of rambling..lean song structure, what a hook and a chorus are..and if need be a bridge (although rare in todays rap music)

2. Read as much as you can on the music business (not just rap magazines, but actual books)

3. Enter rap battles

4. find local musicians, school friedns that are into music..

5. get a job..you need money to pay for demos, promo stuff etc..

6. web presence get a myspace page and start promoting your songs and shows...

7. contact college radio stations to see if they will play your music..
