i'm doing secretarial course but i not sure where i'm heading to with my career?

is ther any advanced thing i can do. i feel as if i'm doing a stupid course

a course usually has several topics and subjects.

you can try to learn more about computer software or learn more about accounting beyond the topics taught in the course in your spare time.

once you settle yourself in your 1st job, you will learn many more things.

if it happens that you stay in the job for many many years to come, you should be grateful.

else, if you have to go into other job designations, you can treat it as a good learning experience while contributing back to society.

i was a draughtsman, web designer, web engineer, sales person, data entry operator, animator, programmer for the past 10 years or so and i don't regret changing jobs as it filled my life with more knowledge and life experiences.

the only regret is i didn't save up for the future other than investing in the I.T. line.

so now, i am back to square 1 in trying to save up either for a rainy day and/or settle down in future.

it is tough for me now and literally i am broke.

but i still have hope for the future. i try not to take things for granted while looking for odd jobs to do.

ahhh. I wish this board was around 25 years ago. I too did a secretarial course, and had the same feelings, only did it because it was either that or working in a shop in a village for the rest of my life and I wanted more, however, just because it is a bit boring at the moment it can go many ways. You could be a private secretary for an individual/celebrity or VIP, look on The Times online or The Guardian online for private work. You could work for the government as an aid or private secretary, you could work in a big financial institution as a team or private secretary. In my time they were trying to phase out shorthand and therefore I was only taught audio, now you need to do both, plus powerpoint, plus excel. You could perhaps to a dictation class for court work, stenographer, that would be interesting. If you have languages french / russian / spanish, you could work for embassy's. You can be so much more than just a secretary. Enjoy

**With the continual advances in IT & computer technology a secretarial role has changed into a far more managerial role. Think Office management, think GP manager, think personal assistent to managing director. And NOT just someone who can type a formal letter, not just a typing clerk.

**Think of your secretarial skills as only the bed rock of your career. You need to think far more of yourself as having a range of talents, or a portfolio of skills, have the flexibility to adapt yourself & skills to new & different situations.

**Build upon your secretarial skills, you could think of adding more IT or computer knowledge to your skills mix.

**Or you could go down a more "people skills" route into managing a team or a group or dept. Think team leadership, group leadership, head of dept,etc.

**Or adding specific financial qualifications to your secretarial skills, so that could take you down the route of say financial services into say manager in building society, or office manager in an accounting company.

**Build ontop of the secretarial course, but think of the things that draw on your personal interests i.e. what interests you & why? Would adding a specific skill, or specific knowledge to your exsisting mix make sense or would it look abit strange on your CV
