My husband is 5'11" and 130 or 135 on a good day. I was looking at some of the powder 'weight gain' products at the health/vitamin stores. They are really expensive (but he is worth it), has anyone tried these? He eats, believe me, he eats. It's just his motabolism is very high and he burns more than I could ever help him to put on. Any advice on what has personally worked for you would be helpful. I tried instant breakfast shakes once. They worked for like one week until I ran out, the weight ran out too. hhheeellllpppp!

Ouch! I'm not trying to change who he is! We've been married for 8+ years! He has been trying to put on weight since he was a teen. Believe me, i knew he was a skinny guy when i married. ha. It's just that he concerned that he will be unhealthy because he drops pounds so easily. HE said he doesn't want to be sickly. He doesn't seem that way to me. But he does get down about his weight. Kind of the opposite as if you were overweight. Underweight does make you self conscience too? no? Trust me, I LOVE HIM NO MATTER WHAT! I just want to be a loving wife and help my sweetheart out.
Ouch....still stinging

The only weight gainers I can recommend as of now are protein based. I am not after putting on weight right now though.
Protein powder is NOT expensive, in my opinion, especially when you consider that it is food, and it is all protein by weight. I wouldn't go with soy, and I wouldn't get a shake with carbs, although perhaps artificial sweeteners are worse. I say just get the cheapest whey powder they have, and go on half-price day if they have it. Otherwise just order it online.
You can always just get your protein from your diet, and you should spread your intake out throughout the day for absorption. It is easy to find enough carbs. Don't overdo carbs, especially sweeteners. Only what you need in order to get enough energy, flavor, and fiber/nutrients. Fruit is a good idea, and nuts, some whole grains, that sort of thing.
You should also take a high quality multivitamin, a powder in a capsule or a liquid brand. Consider your balance of fats coming in and perhaps add a supplement like fish oil. The science on what fats to consume has being going through some changes and I'm still sorting out what is right. I believe Americans tend to be short on Omega-3, for starters. I recommend calcium-magnesium pills also.
You may find creatine to be worthwhile. Do your research before using it. It dehydrates me too much. (I drink coffee, and you're not supposed to mix the two.. must be why)
Now if you are awesome, buy a bottle of MRI's "NO2"... I believe GNC carries it if you have one of those. It is quite expensive but it is quite likely to be more than worth it. For me it is a better deal to only take one dose a day instead of two. I believe it to be safe and even natural to take it. The active ingredient is A-AKG, in case you want to research it. I've tried 3 other brands without luck. Some of the expensive powders you are talking about will contain A-AKG but my guess is that they are very inferior to MRI's version. Don't buy a shake with A-AKG until you've tried NO2 by MRI. Be careful with NO2, it is quite powerful. Ask your doctor if you take any meds or if something else is wrong with your boyfriend's health.
Now all of this is assuming your husband is going to train hard. I would have to guess that squats are primary. That's going to sound wrong but it isn't. Squats and some lunges and leg presses, chin-ups, military press, seated row, crunches. Throw in some standard yoga routines. Wait a few years, and then see if you can still beat him up.

You didn't mention if your husband is concerned about this problem. Therefore, you must ask yourself, does it bother him or is it bothering you?
If it's you, then I suggest you get over it and accept him for who he is. Afterall, you did marry him and there's more to it than a high metabolism. You want a loving husband or a trophy on your arm?
If it's him, then the only way to gain weight is to consume more than he burns. In a world full of people trying to lose weight and become thin, your husband should be lucky he doesn't have this problem. I would embrace his high metabolism and take advantage of it. As he ages, it will slow down and he will gain weight. He has the advantage of lower heart rate, lower cholesterol, better health, etc. If he's concerned or insecure about his physical ability, then consider weight lifting or the martial arts. Both of these can instill confidence as he progress to higher levels. Afterall, Bruce Lee was 5' 6" , weighed 136lbs and was stronger than most power lifters. Would you have messed with him?

I have a high metabolism, weigh the same as your husband, AND my fiance is trying to get me to gain weight as well. The only suggestion I'll offer is if HE wants to gain weight, he needs to do it in a healthy manner, like weightlifting and other fitness means to put on more muscle mass. If he just starts taking supplements and does not exercise, then he'll put on fat, and increase his risk of heart disease via high cholesterol. I am ok with my weight, and know that I'm healthy, you should take comfort in that with him. Good Luck!

My oldest son is the same way. The only thing that seems to work a little for him is weight lifting and weight gain formulas.
