There are several reasons I can think of. First of all through advertising, word of mouth and other's experiences people have learned that cruising is not just for the retired folks. The many commercials on TV have shown that there are a lot of fun things to do on a cruise that are for yourng couples, singles and those with a family. Also, the price of a cruise has dropped and people are finding it affordable to take a cruise with a ll the deals and specials that exist. Its also a unique way to travel, not having to arrange transportation and being able to see many locations without having to stay there for a week. People are more willing to travel to exotic places and those that they many not otherwise travel too. All inclusive deals are also becoming much more popular and people are searching for that type of experience and the fact that food on cruises are one of the largest selling points helps this too!
But if you are looking for the one reason why cruises have become more popular its all about the marketing, positioning and advertising that has broken all the old stereotypes.

Unpack once and see multiple destinations. Cruise is the least stressful of vacations - meals and accommodations are included in the price and you can arrange to have the cruise line book the air, insurance, a pre-cruise hotel stay, and transportation to and from the port with one phone call. There's a vacation to fit everyone's budget and a destination to fit everyone's whim. Ship's offer such a wide variety of activities that there is always something to do no matter what your interests or you can do nothing at all. With the increased number of ships, there is an increase in number of cabins, and prices keep dropping to fill the cabins. I'm sure it is true for many that if they experience a cruise once they will return often and provide good word-of-mouth to other who will then also book.

As a employee, and as someone who has a 6 year career at sea, i guess the only thing i can say is not only word of mouth. But mainly the fact that people can see so many different places in such a short space of time, and from that if they like a place so much they can go back and spend more time there, it's just a great way to get around.

Cruises have generally increased in popularity because people want more luxury. As people are working longer and harder nowadays, they want their holidays to be relaxing and worth the time and money they have saved for the year.
