...and we've post advertisements around the area hoping the owner will find them (its a tame little thing) but until we find its owner what the hell can we feed it? I dont want it to die on us but theres no pet shops near us (unless you can buy bird food in a supermarket- can you?) or is there anything safe we can give it from our cupboards?!

Please do NOT feed any bird uncooked rice as was suggested. Birds can't digest uncooked rice. However, a little cooked rice would be fine.

Your reluctant escapee can eat biscuit but soften it with water or a little fruit juice (no sugar added). They eat greens; collard and beets are best. He can also eat chopped apple (no apple seed), grapes, orange, mango, corn, and peas. Please do not feed him chocolate or avocado as these are toxic to birds. He needs seed and yes you can buy it in a supermarket but be sure to change his seed and water every day. If possible, buy him seed especially designed for Canaries.

There are several lost bird sites on the Internet where you can post a message. Also, call your local Humane Society and let them know that you've found a Canary should anyone call regarding a lost bird.

I have posted an article pertaining to the care of Canary friend. If you don't find the owner and don't want to keep the bird, please call a local avian rescue group and they will find a suitable home for him.

Good luck!

you can get canary mix from the supermarket. I can't believe there is anwhere in the UK with no pet shop to supply the needs of pet keppers in your area.
Take no notice of that idiot jo-jo. You must NEVER feed uncooked rice to a bird as it will kill it. She is pure evil for suggesting you do it.

P.S. there is no such thing as RSPCB. People are getting confused. There is an RSPCA or the RSPB. The latter deals only with wild birds.

Hello there lovely story. Yes they do sell bird food in supermarkets, kept in the pet section normally. Meanwhile give it some water. Try putting a wee note up in your local vets surgery.

well 2 things ..1 is if no one claims the canary and you decide to keep it then you need to get as much info as poss about how to look after this bird, just look on line for info...its like anything really do your homework on it..! and 2 if you decide to get rid then as someone said call the RS-PCB they will help and guide you..but in the mean time just feed it on bread and crunched cereal..it will eat if its hungry and wont kill it ok.....Good luck....

You should be able to feed it some rice. No need to cook it! Or crushed up cereal like cornflakes. The most important thing is that it has access to water and that you keep it warm as it will probably have had a bit of a shock.

In addition to canary seed, I feed mine fresh fruit which includes banana, papaya, apples, mangos (all but oranges and grapefruit); veggies of all kinds, cooked rice, oatmeal, cornmeal, scrambled eggs, pureed chicken, pasta.....the only thing you really need to remember is to stay away from mild products and citrus.
Don't give them salty things. herbs are ok.
hope this helps.
