I had a discussion with a (religious) friend if God existed or not.

My problem with God is that there is no proof of him except the Bible that is clearly WRITTEN BY US. - That doesn't prove anything.

The only reason people believes in God is that their parents (or someone else) convinced them to believe in him. Still no proof.

I can’t understand that so many believe in something nobody can prove.

God was made up back in the days when we couldn’t explain science so we made a desperate back-up. Now I don’t see any reason to still believe in him.

Sure, I can’t prove that he doesn’t exist either. But you can’t prove that the cookie-monster that rules the sky doesn’t exist either – why don’t don’t you believe in him instead?

What do you think?

First you have to find out what god means to each person. To some it is nature ("just look around"), and others it is a personal god that listens to them and cares about them. Now the latter has no evidence that we can measure and the probability of a personal god is very low. Many people need something to believe in and comfort them in this world as we all know we are going to die. It is just like taking drugs, altering reality to feel better. What would people believe if they had not been taught (brainwashed) about god? If the god of the bible were real he would be brought up on war crimes for all the suffering he has caused. That god would make a horrible parent because he appears to enjoy the suffering of his children. Sadistic bastard. If people want to worship something, use the sun. You can prove it's there and it provides us with life. That's a god you can count on.

I Do Believe God Exists. When I Need Him He Is Always Glad To Lend A Helping Hand. Just Think About It If God Did Not Exist Who Created You.

Ok, forget belief and all that, here's a serious philosophical idea.

According to his believers, God is good. Not that he simply acts good, he actually IS good. So if God is good, that would mean that he could make anything good. Currently, giving to charity is good and according to this idea, it's because God says it is. But therefore, he could make torturing innocent children good and we know that that isn't true.

So if God isn't actually good, then he must show us what good is. Rather than making giving to charity good, he shows us it is. But that means that there is no point to God, he just shows us something we could find out for ourselves and so therefore he doesn't exist.

There's also the age old thought (which someone might have already posted but I can't be bothered to read through) that God, being all powerful, creates a rock which is impossible to lift.

But if it's impossible to lift, not even God can lift it which means he isn't all powerful.

But if he CAN'T lift it, then that means he isn't all powerful.

The list goes on. Many people have thought of situations that not even God himself can get out of. So there you go, God does exist in a clear logical arguement. Sorted.

It is sad that you fail to experience the eternal power that controls all our lives.. God does exist and he does perform miracles even today, its just we are too busy to notice it. An example from todays life - If u are aware of the festival called 'Eid' you will know that the moon is sighted for a few minutes on a moonless night... how is that possible when it does not happen during any other scientific time of the year? Do u need more examples???

There are seven basic proofs God exists. Properly, they belong in a separate book all by themselves, but I will cover them briefly here.
(1) That there is a great CREATION is obvious. The very fact of the existence of THINGS; the universe, the solar system, the earth and all myriad forms of life upon it, demands a CREATOR!
(2) The existence of great, immutable, powerful LAWS (and I speak of the "laws" governing the physical universe; the laws of science and chemistry; laws governing the action of water in its three states; the cleavage and fracturing properties of minerals; gravity, inertia, isostasy, etc., etc.). The existence of these great laws demands a lawgiver!
(3) The intricacy of complex design; whether the feathers on the wing of a bird; the eye of a fly; the breathing apparatus of a dolphin; billions of intricately-designed snowflakes; your own muscular, skeletal, digestive and circulatory systems-etc., etc., requires a great DESIGNER!
(4) LIFE exists. Life in myriad forms. You and I both know that life only comes from preexisting life! This is called the "law of biogenesis." Life demands a great LIFE GIVER!
(5) Life only comes from preexisting life of the same kind! Thus, there is procreation, and the sustaining of life on our planet; the constant recycling of falling trees, rotting vegetation; the bacteria which break it down to become food for the insects which are food for dozens of other creatures, which are in turn food for larger creatures, which are in turn food for man; the cyclical character of our symbiotic environment which, like a gigantic machine was once "wound up," and is gradually running down, requires a sustaining force. Inherent within this proof are the laws governing the "conservation" of energy" and the laws of thermodynamics. It is obvious our universe has a great sustaining force-a GREAT SUSTAINER!
(6) Fulfilled prophecies, of which there are dozens, with dozens more yet to be fulfilled, constitute a great proof of Almighty God. Even simple high school or beginning college-level Bible handbooks such as Halley's, or the Angus Bible Handbook contain fascinating proofs from the spade of archeologists corroborating the prophecies of men who foretold the collapse of great empires and the emergence of others centuries and centuries beyond their own lifetime. Now, we are able to look back at such men as Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel and others, and see what they foretold actually HAPPENED exactly as they foretold it!
Many of the biblical prophecies are in process of being fulfilled. The serious student of biblical archeology knows that it is axiomatic that, wherever archeology reveals information about ancient civilizations, it always corroborates the biblical record, never refutes it!
(7) The final proof-one which dyed-in-the-wool disbelievers will doubtlessly scoff at-is answered prayer! Of course. God does not answer the prayers of skeptics and disbelievers. However, those individuals who have experienced the answer to PRAYER; those who have been healed of their sicknesses and diseases, who have actually seen miracles performed, are no longer doubting, but believing. Answered prayer is definitely a proof that there is a God who can hear. and answer!

I think it's more a question of 'What is God', it's foolish to believe that their is a humanoid entity somewhere judging people.
However it has become a fact of science that evolution is not responsable for life, and that life on this planet would not exist unless a multitude of parameters where manipulated just right to make it work.
Obviously there is some intelligent designer beyond our comprehension, but the Gods of religous doctrines, please, might as well through in the tooth fairy and santa claus!

YES God exists.
And your talk yourself out of the proof that is available.
Despite the Bible being a corruptible book, hence translations and interpretations and politics! the people who wrote it did so because they have their own testimonies to add to history.
12 apostles saw Jesus die. 12 apostles saw him appear in a locked room and felt him and talked with and for fourty days afterward ate fish with him as they sat by the edge of the lake.
i dont believe that is mythology.
throughout the centuries other manuscriptis in history also proclaimed similar testimonies of seeing christ coming in glory just as Paul saw Jesus, whom was so zealous in stalking the christian sect that jesus rebuked him in a vision that others saw too.
My personal testimony comes down to the basic 4 vision i had. One i saw an angelic being appear in my room as an angel of light and another of Jesus in the morning sun of glory, and two others of Jesus. These vision proved to me that there is a god because the existence of Jesus christ was manifest.
I dont think there is any one on earth can produce the same vision in magnitude and equality. though I admit and confess there are many lesser dreams and lesser realms of power whereby men might be able decieve someone in a dream to believe in a false demigod.

Again proof is as big as looking at the existence of the world. Where there is a house that is built means that there was a carpenter or a contractor that had it built.
and secondly there are people who have talked to god face to face and eye to eye. and witnessed by thousands through history.

a book I liked opened with a very nice phrase.

I do not believe in God.
What I believe in, I call God.

that is, that what YOU mean when YOU say God does not neccesarily have anything to do with what I mean when I say God, and my beliefs are not bound by your terms.

you have a few assumptions which are incorrect... that is that nobody has seen any proof.

personally I have observed PLENTY of evidence, for me, to have absolutely zero doubt in my mind whatsoever that what I call God, does in fact exist. zero question of it.

just because YOU have not seen evidence does not mean NOBODY has.
