If they flick a small pen light or flashlight quickly before your eyes, they are checking for pupil responses. Your pupil, the little black opening, will open up more and be a bigger black opening in darker light. The MORE light that shines into our eyes, the more the pupil closes up and becomes a smaller black opening. Dilated pupils means the pupil is open wide and makes your iris (the color part of your eye) look very dark. If a doctor shines a special kind of a light tool called an opthalmoscope, she or he is looking through the opening, the pupil, and all the way through the clear liquidy gel inside your eye to the back wall of your eye. That back wall is covered with capillaries, or, tiny blood vessels. That area in the back of your eyes is called a "retina". Many diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, will cause those capillaries to rupture. That can cause blindness.

Patois has it absolutely correct.

I have considerable experience in the matter. I am a diabetic and have to be very careful with everything in my body including my eyes. I have an annual retina screening and regular check ups so I have been through these drills many times.
