It all depends on the strength of the magnet applied to the screen as to whether it can be recovered or not. If they have used a very strong magnet then it could have distorted the screen mask, but I doubt your kids would have access to something this strong.
Your TV has a built in circuit called a 'degausser' , sometimes you may hear a metallic clang when you switch your TV on, this is the degauss circuit operating. Basically it is designed to normalise the magnetic field around the screen to remove the effects of the earths magnetic field and metal objects placed near the screen. This circuit will operate only from a 'cold start', so you have to disconnect the TV from the mains and leave it for 8 hours, it won't ever operate if you leave your TV in standby. After 8 hours switch the TV back on and see if it is improved. You may get gradual improvement by repeating this method.
If not you need to get the screen manually demagnetised, just take it to a local tv repair shop (don't even think about taking it to comet or Currys), they have a magnetised 'wand' which they pass over the screen which will do the trick. They should charge you approx £5-15 according to the mood they're in.
Ignore the answers telling you your TV is terminally damaged, they are talking out their ar*es

Yes, it will disappear.
Most TV sets have a degauss coil around the screen which operates on turning the TV on/off. This neutralises the magnetic field that is causing the colour problems you speak of.
Turning it on and off ought to solve the problem, if not a TV service technician could sort it out in seconds with a degauss rod.
Hope this has helped.

It might disapear. Depends on how strong the magnet was. My brother did this to my grandmas tele a couple of years ago and it went 'pretty' Lasted about a week before returning to normal. If it doesn't disapear, I do believe you may need to get a new tele. And take the magnets away!!!

On the older sets you could adjust the alignment of the tube, but I don't think you can do this with the modern ones. Since the picture is formed by the positioning of magnetic fields you are altering the these patterns. You will probably need a new set.
Throw away the magnets !

What happened is that your picture tube is magnetized and it needs to be degaused or in other words demagnetized. You can call a local tv shop to see what the price is to have this done. I have done this many times during my carrer in tv repair and I can tell you that this procedure only takes a minute to perfrom. Don't let someone rip you off by making you think it is a complex repair.
In some cases the internal circuitry in the tv can demag your tv by turning your tv on and off several times. Also If you happen to have or can find a tape head demagnetizer you may be able to demag by going in a circular motion up close to your picture tube screen with your tv turned on. Hope this helps.

The tube inside has a de-guass feature that removes any residual magnetism that build up on the screen, it the thump you can hear on some tv's when you turn them on. If the distortion is there after a couple of on/offs then there is nothing else you can do.
I'm afraid if things donw improve within a week its likely ruined, tvs are very suseptible to magnatism.
Never mind, LCD HD digital widescreens are cheap these days !

This happened when we put a speaker too close to our TV. Leave your TV switched off for at least 24 hours (to give it time to recover) and hopefully it will go back to normal. Thats what happened with ours. If it doesn't recover you'll have to buy a replacement, I'd go for something inexpensive if the children are at that young curious stage!
You can turn it into something positive by encouraging them to look up magnetism on the internet and learn about it (how stuff works is good!).

Best way to fix this though nowadays Buying a new one might cost less, is to call a TV repairman to get your screen degaused.. Isn't it nice that Computer monitors come with a bilt in deguser....

have a look at the settigns on your monitor, see if there is a 'degauss' option, sometiomes it appears as an icon looking like a horseshoe magnet with several wavy lines
