Yes. This is the right age to start learning any instrumental music. Please ensure that the child practises 45-60 minutes everyday.
If you initiate a child right now, he/she would take at least 4-5 years and would be ready for stage performance at the age of 12-13 years. This would give him ample time to get mature in the music and to adapt/understand complexity of the rhythm.
I wish your child all the best and welcome him to the world of performing arts.

I have heard that the best way to teach a child is to foster interest in him/her. If you child is curious about the tabla, and wants to learn it, then definitely go ahead. If not, he's never gonna be old enough (or young enough) to learn whatever he doesn't have interest in.
Children are old enough to play the tabla about two years or so after they start walking and talking.
Here's a link of a 4 year old playing the tabla.

Not only is it possible, it is also best to begin early.
I do not play tabla, but I play several other instruments. My only regret is that I did not start earlier (I was 12 for drums, 14 for guitar, and 19 for bagpipes).
Also, music will enhance development in many areas of education, particularly math.
Hope this helps.

I don't know a lot about tabla in general but in our culture, if a child is interested in a musical instrument and shows signs of wanting to learn it, then it's OK to start with some basic lessons. 8 is pretty young to be serious about something like that, but maybe not too young for your child??? You know him/her, we don't. You have to decide based on the child...

I agree to some extent. I think it depends on how young you are reffering. My 9 and 11 year b oth play 2 or more instruments and began playing their first around age 6. My youngest wont turn 6 until next week so she wont be starting any music lessons until next year. Music does expand their creativity and teach them discipline however i do not know that it truly makes them a smarter person later. I think any child who has interest in music or instruments should be taught about them so they expand their knowledge however. My husband never played an instrument and he is extremely intelligent. I started on piano at age 4, moved on to violin, fiddle, guitar, flute, harp, and drums. Music calms me and helps me maintain patience so we always have music playing within our home. But musical appreciation does not necissarily mean playing an instrument. Dance, vocals and simply listening to music are also very good ways to learn the same teaching playing an instrument promotes.

Yes he can start to learn play tabla, but please do ensure that the practise sessions are no more than 1 hr everyday as playing tabla put strain on the fingers.

Of course, as a child, you're able to learn quicker than when you're older because you're being exposed to NEW material.. I heard that a child knew 7 different languages at the age of 14 because he learned them all when he was young.

of course, and why not.
for e.g.- if you are weak in maths, the solution to that was that you should have worked hard in the early classes.you will not have to suffer now.Similarly, if the child starts learning tabla from childhood, he/she will be perfect in it.
