With over 10 years of experience I can tell you that this is not possible. Doing this would be like trying to retrieve a candy rapper from the trash, but you already took out the trash and the trashmen already came.

I'm really sorry this has happened to you. I agree with most of the other answers - retrieving these from your hard drive will be all but impossible. I say all but because law enforcement agencies seem to have experts capable of retrieving stuff that is assumed to have been permanently deleted.

However I'm more interested in your disk. You say it is broken. What exactly do you mean by that. It takes a fair bit of strength to snap a DVD or CD - it doesn't happen by accident.

If you mean that the disk is corrupted - and can't be read - that is a different matter. Then you may have a chance of retrieving most if not all of the pictures if you can find someone (computer geek in local shop) to attempt to recover the data.

The site below contains some useful information and links to downloads you might try.

http://www.tech-pro.net/how-to-data-recovery.html

WARNING

It may take a number of attempts to recover anything from the recycle bin - if indeed that is possible. Each attempt is likely to result in loss/degradation of data.

Before attempting any recovery of data on the hard drive set a restore point. That way - if any of the software you install causes a problem, you can go back and start again.

Start
Programs
Accessories
System
System Restore

Finally, one of the answers suggests restoring your computer to before the files were deleted. I'm afraid that wont work. The restore keeps track of your system and applications software (via your registry settings) - not your data. If you don't believe me. Set a restore point now. Delete a file you don't need, then go back to the restore point. That file will not be recovered.

you must know that when u delete a file from the recycle or u use shift+delete, you dont delete the file, but the "pointer" or the adrees where he can be found on the HDD. Also, if you format your HDD and you think it cool and empty, acttualy all the stuff that was before is stiil there, but the registration is gone :)
a file can be stored in a continuos zone of your HDD, or it can be split.....you know, when the split average 4 all your files is too big, your PC is working slow and u use defragment, no?
So a file is actualyy deleted if the memory where it is stored is OverWritten.
However, there are programs that can recreate a file that had been deleted (see the other answers.....), but the result is may be not 100% if some of his contains had been overwritten.
Also, here comes in place the extension..........
i hope you will be able now to restore the files, but in future always (ALWAYS!!!!!) store your work in 2 places on the HDD, and on 2 CD . Maybe this sound silly, but this is how i do when i work on something important.

you may or may not be able to get these back. if you have a home network, like me, i use an old computer as a server. everyone's my documents are linked to a share folder on the server.

we keep a copy of files on the computer, one on the server and 4 copies on discs, one at the computer, one at server, one in a safe and one at someone elses house.

this way we are guaranteed that we will never lose important photos and videos again.

so far this has worked for us 17 times.

when a virus has hit the server, transferred to all the computers, and then a CD broke, we still had other copies.

try that in the future but good luck trying to find your pix.

also, if you have XP (which everyone does), try start, search, and type in one of the filenames.

this has worked for me once when i did this, but don't get your hopes up because i cant promise it'll work.

Try booting from a Knoppix CD and see if you can locate the lost files and write them to another floppy or a USB pen drive. Do this before you use your computer for a long period so you will decrease the possibility that the pictures will be overwritten on your hard drive.

If you go into Help and support and go into system restore. If you take the computer back to the time just before you deleted them they may still be there. I don't know whether you could them copy them to disc, but it's worth a try. If they do appear and you manage to take them off, remember to go back to system restore and put it back to today's date. The only trouble doing this, is that you may lose new information etc that has been added to your computer.

there are several programs outthere that will do this trick
the one i use is called system data recovery

you can not use this program from the same hard drive as the one that you are trying to recover items from

its not easy to do but its possible no matter how times you have reformated or even f disked,

i dont recommend anyone with limited computer knowledge to try this

You'll have got the idea that a recovery program might just prove successful if you're very lucky and the disk space hasn't been overwritten.

Whatever happens, I reckon we all wish you luck. And I bet you'll keep multiple backups in future, won't you?

1 stop using the computer NOW! (Continued use will overwrite the disk space where your files are)
2 beg, borrow, or steal a file recovery utility(often found on cover disks)
3 Use it...best of luck

You can try a file recovery program but there's no guarantee it will work. When files have been deleted, Windows marks the space on the hgard drive as being available; they may have been overwritten. :(
