No professional buys kits.
If you don't know what you want without getting a kit, it would be a very good idea to try and land an apprenticeship with a tattoo shop. Seriously, once you get the kit, then what? How do you assemble the machine (hint: a complete set-up still requires assembly for *every* tattoo). Besides, you're definitely in the realm of "you get what you pay for." Under $200 and you may as well be doing jailhouse tattoos with a Bic pen and a Walkman motor. A decent power supply alone *should* cost at least half that, and even a low-cost machine should be the other half...however, if you're going to do work you're not going to be embarrassed by, you'll need at least two machines...one for lining, and one for shading. A kit won't have both, NOR will it give you any clue as to what the difference is.

...and that just scratches (no pun intended) the surface. Besides, if the shape of the foot switch is the criteria you're using to select your kit, your priorities are WAY off. For the sake of anybody other than yourself that you'll mark for life, get an apprenticeship.

Maybe you should check out the classifieds in the back of some tattoo magazines.

Go to a parlor to get one. If you're not looking to get one, spend the extra dough to get the worthwhile kit.
