I'm in the military and most of my colleagues average a 7:00 minute mile run pace. I only average a 9 min mile, sometimes faster, sometimes slower. When I'm in the civilian world, I feel pretty good about my running. When I'm around other soldiers, I feel terrible.

I'd like to know: overall, is a 9 min mile pace good, bad or decent?

I can run a 9:00 mile pace outside for about 3 miles. On a treadmill, about 4 miles.

6 minute mile is considered a decent race pace. 9 minute mile is still fast...you are running at 6.6 miles an hour (over double walking speed) If you are only starting training 9 minute miles are to be expected. If you have been running for a few months, try pushing yourself each day and you will improve rapidly. (Also, I don't know how far you are running. This also dictates how good of a pace it is. If you are only running 1 mile, you need to improve. If you are running 6 miles, that is a decent speed)

Many moons ago when I was in ROTC, the women were required to complete 3 miles in 29 minutes while the guys were required to complete the 3 miles in 21 minutes. That's a 9 minute mile for the ladies, a 7 minute mile for the guys. If you can consistently run a 9 minute mile as a female, then according to my memory, you're right on track. However, if you want to be an Olympian, then 4 minute mile is the standard.

I am in the same boat as you. I need to complete a 1.5 mile in 12:30 and thought that I was doing pretty good with the time that I had, but I found that I was wrong. Check out the Cooper Fitness standards. The majority of police departments use these as the basis for their tests. It goes by age and sex.

I personally don't think that 9 is a bad time, but they may say otherwise.
