Firstly choose the flavour you would like to achieve. Sweet, sharp etc. Then decide on the base ingredients. What kind of spirits, will it be fruit based or another style. If you can get your hands on a book called "The Barman's Cherry", it not only has hundreds of recipes but also a list of base materials in the front index. If you like gin try this one:
3 shots Tanqueray gin
1 shot Orange Liqueur
1 1/2 shots sour mix
1 shot grenadine syrup

Prepare a long glass (Poco or Hurricane are best if you can find them) by putting in the freezer for an hour. Then fill with crushed ice

Mix the ingredients by thouroughly shaking in a shaker that has plenty of ice. once mixed add in 3 shots fresh orange juice and mix again.

Strain the drink through into the prepared glass and serve with orange pieces and cherry. Gorgeous.
