And He answered and said, "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH '?
"So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."
They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?"
He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.
(Matthew 19:4-8)

Considering some "sexist" thing you might read about in Deu.,such as the punishment for rape and the procedure for marrying a captive woman, do you think they were "sexist" or just allowances because men's hearts were hard?

But why do you say it's sexist?

What about a woman Judge in Ancient Israel? (that seems pretty progressive to me).

I'm here to debate plain and simple. Can you answer the question or what? If you don't want to debate, you ain't gotta be here.

I don't think that all things feminine are sacred and perfect and all things male are evil. I think that it ludicrous to act like just because a man is in control mens that he's oppressive. Just because a woman isn't a leader doesn't mean that she's ill-treated. Seriously, do women need more power or more respect and care and love and treatment as a valuable being?

Very. That is what the cultural laws and mores of the time were when it was written. And unfortunately some people want to continue for it to be that way.

The entire Bible is sexist, at least within contemporary interpretations!

As 'modern' people, we apply contemporary (and not so pomo) interpretations to the OT and NT.

The real problem is that the OT was written at a time when survival itself was near impossible - drives toward sex-as-procreation became the only way to propogate our species.

The 'four horsemen of the Apocalypse' (apparently, there was a fifth - read Pratchett and Gaiman) were personifications of what affected every living person at the time. But...

Most academics and translators of the scraps left of the 'original' OT agree that it is a patriarchal document: i.e. males are favoured and women not. It is, perhaps, a deliberate and cynical reversal of the 'goddess' worship which predates all written accounts of our religiosity.

We still recognise THAT worship in our notion of Mother Earth. And the 'snake' in the Bible which threatens Adam and Eve is sometimes perceived as goddess worship. Eve bites the 'apple' of knowledge (Adam is, as usual, the gormless male) and realizes the truth behind her creation...

But specifically, in answer to your question, you don't have to be afraid that you have 'sinned': any religion based upon patriarchal suppression and mores will always support stoning and blame: especially toward women. After all, they were the instigators, weren't they?

"Don't be Denied",

Paul

Why do you ask such silly questions that are obviously refutable.
If you want to know something truthfully why not ask sensibly.
Of course you heart is not really into knowing you ask immature questions but not wanting a serious answer. Why bother waste of time.
You only get back patted from those who already have the same mentality as you. You offer nothing educative to the table.
Grow up then come back and ask sensibly.

You cannot attach labels such as "sexist" or "racist" so simply to historical documents and situations. You should try to develop a more sophisticated understanding of history. We should not apply the standards of the present to the past, and it is infantile to think that "they should have known better" - they didn't, we do.
In fact, we should know a lot better, and do away with religion altogether.

You have to account for the times they lived in--with no welfare system, birth control, supermarkets, cars, etc. a woman had a serious disadvantage in life, since she was the one with the womb who would have to keep and care for any child she concieved, regardless of whether or not the man chose to stick around--these laws were designed to ensure all of society was cared for in a time when they knew nothing of psychology or science--they were flawed by today's standards, but back then they were what worked for them

The Bible, Quran and most religious books and doctrine are sexist... written by men in a male orientated and dominated time and society when women were only considered o be second or third class citizens and chattels.
