Teaching a child to swim actually starts in the bathtub. Get the infant used to water on their face and make a game of it. So many of us reach for a cloth to dry off their faces but this can teach them that water on the face is not good. Have them blow bubbles and look for items of the bottom of the tub." Parent and me" classes where I taught swimming began when the child is anywhere from about 9 months and up. The chlorine can be really drying on their skin so wash and moisturize them after the classes. At age 3 the child can start regular lessons with an instructor. My daughter learned to swim in a Canadian Tire pool in the back yard at about age 2. She still loves the water and swam competitively right through University plus Kayaks and surfs. In a nutshell the sooner you expose the child to water the earlier they will actually swim. Your attitude towards the water can make a big difference .Make it fun.

I had my son in swimming lessons at 15 months..thsi is NOT to say he ws able to swim freely around the pool..he could jump off the diving board..with someone in the water to be there and bring him up for a breath and then on the count of 3 send him to the ladder on his own..This is the method we usd for a few yerars really..they will not be strong enough to swim freely for a while after this..

A newborn can swim and hold its breath by instinct.
Throw it in the water (professionally, not just in a bath tub) from three weeks to a year. It's great exersize and lots of fun.

I say as soon as possible because they are still used to the floating in the womb. And kids are natural breather in the water, so they can take it. Do it in the pool though :), not in the bath tub. Also, be ready to face the situation, it will not be a beautiful sight seeing your kid struggling in water (I have been there, believe me). But if you really want to teach him/her, go ahead, it will be really fun, for both of you.
