People in general are easily offended, and religion is usually one of the basic building blocks of a person's self-perceived character (ego). Most people are insecure in themselves, and if a person questions their religious underpinnings, then the ego is threatened at a very basic level, and they feel the need to lash out to protect themselves.
It is the fragile ego that makes a person unable to withstand questions and interpret them as threats. This is also why many people just can't stand to be wrong, or at least to be perceived as wrong. It threatens their ego and makes them feel that they are lost and worse than alone--it makes them feel a fundamental fear for their souls.
So, in short, their faith is not strong enough to withstand tests of it. They've got lots of work to do! (And by "strong faith" I do not mean dogged adherence to dogma!)

Hi Leoness, Religious people are offended simply because they are in a religion. The religious people in the day of Jesus was also easily offended. The Phaarisees and the saduccess were always offended. In fact Jesus taught the opposite. He taught Patience, love, joy, peace, forgiveness, doing that which is right, repentence from sin , if we correct someone, correct them in love not in hatred or anger or pride, etc. So just ignore those people who are hateful, judgemental, rude, out to stir trouble etc. There will alwaays be troublemakers, we cant stop them but we can ignore them and there are people here who are not like that. Talk and fellowship with them instead.
Hope this helps

Their irrational responses to any questions and criticisms that they perceive as undermining their religion/faith is simply a result of them not having any rational responses to give. They cannot prove that their faith is right. They cannot show you what they believe in. They have given in to the believe or be damned argument and expect everyone else to do the same.
If you don't give in as they have they see you as a threat since it obviously means that you are somehow stronger than they are, hence some for of violence from their side, be it verbal or physical.
There is no sensible communication to be had from them because they are currently in a place where common sense had to make way for blind faith.

why do nonreligious people get so offended?
Everyone gets offended. Everyone has a different level of tolerance- a different 'boiling point', I guess. some are more easily offended than others- it is all about pride- religion has nothing to do with it. I am sure you can find MANY questions on here asked by 'religious' people where athiest answers are attacking and derogatory. It is human nature- everyone wants to be right, everyone wants to be respected , noticed, etc and when someone says something in opposition - feelings get hurt.
It is not about religion or nonreligion- it takes a certain amount of maturity either way to not get so easily offended and get up in arms just because someone believes something different. I am not saying your belief is right, but it is not going to make me upset or offended because you believe differently- I will state the truth and move on- the rest is between you and God and I wish you nothing but the best.
The same should go both ways - I have not looked at your questions yet, but for you and everyone, religious or not- before you get upset over being attacked or people getting all bent out of shape over your question, ask yourself, was your question attacking in tone or offensive? I see a lot of that on here offensive questions, offended and offensive answers- it's just plain silly and immature.

The concept of religion and faith is always on shaky ground because the only 'proof' the religious ones have is faith itself. I'm not an atheist, maybe an agnostic but I will always question the whole thing until I get an epiphany or something.

You be damned for questioning the fortitude of the religious folks! Don't you know they run this joint? (hehehehehehe)
You could probably question the way they raise their kids and get away with a lot more than if you question their beliefs on religion.
Disclaimer: Not all of them are like that, but some of them just make you scratch your head and wonder!

I am highly religious, moreso spiritual, and I think that maybe the issue is that if someone disagrees with their religion, it proves that its not the only religion out there, which means it may not be the "RIGHT" religion...though there is no such thing. This insecurity is what leads to a lot of terrible things.
I embrace all different spiritual paths as beautifully diverse and true in its own way. We are all on different paths to the same end, friend.
And yes, I am Wiccan.
Dont worry, now the comments may be directed at me instead lol.
Bright blessings!

Hi Leoness. First off thanks for picking my answer as the best.I think the reason that christians are easily offened is cause, they think they r right all the time, and our views just don't matter, only cause we don't believe the way they do. What they fail 2 realize is that God loves each & everyone of us the same. He has no fav's. Email me if u want.

Because you're offending them! Duh! And all you people answering "Because they don't like being questioned" think of it this way:
If someone came up and said something about a member of your family or one of your friends, you would be annoyed and want them to shut up, because you love these people and couldn't live without them. Religious people live with their faith, and believe in it. That's the most simple way to put it, be empathatic, put yourself in their shoes, and if you aren't religious at all, think of faith as a friend or family member.

Try being a religious person and you'll really understand what it's like to be attacked. Just look around these question forums and you'll see what I mean.
