The egg carton says "Sell By Dec. 1". Are they still good for consuming now that it's 8 days past the sell by date? I really want an egg right now!! hahaha

The fresher the egg, the more rounded the yolk will be when you crack it open. So if the yolk -assuming that you didn't break the yolk-is flat looking, then it isn't as fresh. However, you can still eat it. As long as it doesn't stink or look obviously rotten.

This is what the USDA website has to say about the date on your egg carton-

DATING OF CARTON
Many eggs reach stores only a few days after the hen lays them. Egg cartons with the USDA grade shield on them must display the "pack date" (the day that the eggs were washed, graded, and placed in the carton). The number is a three-digit code that represents the consecutive day of the year (the "Julian Date") starting with January 1 as 001 and ending with December 31 as 365.

Always purchase eggs before the "Sell-By" or "EXP" (expiration) date on the carton. After the eggs reach home, they may be refrigerated 3 to 5 weeks from the day they are placed in the refrigerator. The "Sell-By" date will usually expire during that length of time, but the eggs are perfectly safe to use. This date is not federally required, but may be State required.

Put an egg in a small glass of water and if the egg floats it is bad.

If you have any question at all, don't eat it. A new dozen eggs costs less than a dollar, and I think you'd rather have a little inconvenience than food poisoning.

I think mrtazzone is right, though.

it's been done. if it smells bad when you crack it open, you will know you shouldn't eat it. bad egg smell is hard to miss. it's kinda like milk. Sometimes you can push it, but if it smells bad, don't drink it!
