Paul Verhoeven who made Showgirls, Robocop and Starship Troopers is risking death threats to make a movie theorizing that Jesus may have been a regular ol' dude and not the Son of God. Verhoeven knows the controversy that surrounds the project, and probably knows that it could become his last film in the States.

Yeah, and everyone involved could be blacklisted and get kicked out of Hollywood. Stuff like this has been done before but not in this day and age when filmmaking has grown into such an effective medium.

Standing up to orthodoxy and fundamtentalism takes guts. While it is true that in the 21st century, Christian extremists are less likely to murder a film maker than Muslim extemists are, the risk to Verhoeven's life is not insubstantial and I have nothing but respect for his courage to explore a somewhat non-traditional idea about Christianity. It may even cost him his career, as you mentioned. That in itself is a bold move for a movie director, especially in an age where production houses are more and more inclined to cater to conservative, family audiences.

I will certainly go see it. I am an atheist, so perhaps it is just easier for me to see an alternative idea without being offended, but I hope that many, many people go see it, if for no other reason than to support freedom of expression of an unpopular idea. That and because the movie will probably be pretty good given the cast he's hunting for and the production team he's lined up...

Absolutely NOT! Here is why:

Jesus Christ only lived 33 years, never went more than 30 miles from his home, never wrote a book, never was on tv, never made a cd or any multimedia source and YET

-- Jesus Christ has influenced the world more than any person;

-- Jesus Christ's existence separates history (ad or bc);

-- Jesus Christ has more books written about him than any person in history;

-- Jesus Christ is the Ruler of the largest religion in the world;

-- Jesus Christ had 11 apostles and numerous martyrs die excruciating deaths believing in the Messiah, the Son of God;

-- Jesus Christ as the promised messiah fulfilled over 300 prophesies in the Old Testament. Just fulfilling 50 makes the odds of doing so 10X135 power, an astronomical number. No human being or religious leader's existence was fortold with such clarity, never fulfilled so many prophesies about them, not even Moses, Muhammad (pbuh), Buddha, Confuscious or anyone!

In short, Jesus Christ has accomplished things NO OTHER HUMAN BEING HAS DONE in the entire history of mankind. If anyone thinks Jesus Christ is JUST A GOOD TEACHER they are very unrealistic by making such a huge understatement.

I watched the Davinci Code and it was controversal enough. Don't know might have to consider.

Because I certainly don't agree it's true. But it might be interesting to hear the arguments.
