Heather,
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
Sounds easy, and it is. Tell God what you want to know, and then wait until He tells you. Don’t get in a hurry because if you are determined to hear something in the spirit world right away – you will hear something, but it may not be God. Time permitting – it is always best to tell God what you need to know and just wait.
He can speak through the still, small voice on the inside of you or through visions or dreams; He will confirm things to you through family and friends and fellow Christians. He spoke to me twice many years ago in a voice that I thought was audible, but I was the only one in a crowded church who heard it.
It will increase your sensitivity to God’s voice if you fast, or pray in the Spirit, or put on some very worshipful music, or do all the above. Just lay down your life including all of your worries and listen. Stay in God’s presence until you are not distracted by anything and listen. Sometimes in our busyness, it takes quite a while to let go of every distraction.
Jesus expects obedience from His followers, so He must communicate His will to us. Learn as much as you can from the Word because that will answer many questions for you automatically. However, you also must be able to hear God’s voice because there are many specific questions that the Bible doesn’t answer:
What did God create me to do? What car should I buy? Where should I work? Who should I marry? Which church should I attend?
You have to be able to determine God’s will to obey it, so common sense tells you that He must reveal His will.
Ask yourself what Jesus would do, and then do that, or ask yourself what your natural inclination is, and then do the opposite – that almost always works. Practically, I have often had to get busy and let God shut doors and open doors. You can’t steer a parked car. When we begin to move, sometimes God guides us in just that way.
In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. Proverbs 16:9
Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21
I prefer to hear God speak to me before I start moving, but you can see from these Proverbs that sometimes we make plans, and God determines if they will succeed. Job hunting sometimes works this way for me. Make your best decision, and God will close the doors that you shouldn’t go through and open the door that He intends for your success. Whatever course you choose, don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t go perfectly at first. The only way to fail is to quit.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3
God bless,
Tom

These are just thoughts ... My thoughts. Remembering that there is more than one way to go about doing just about anything, and different things work for different people, you might consider and even try the following ... How to do God's will? From moment to moment just do the next right thing. Doing the next right thing NOW makes latter turn out a lot better most of the time. How to pray for guidance? Just ask. And then trust. Because there will be moments when you may not be sure what "the next right thing" is. Life gets complicated, or at least we feel that way at times. Asking, praying, for that guidance is simple. A very REAL question is ... How do I RECEIVE guidance? Answer: How has God spoken to most people down through the ages? Through other people. Want to receive guidance when in doubt concerning that next right thing? Talk to people you trust, people who have personal experience in the same area, and go with sound council. You'll hear God's words to you in that way ... In the words of those around you that care. ~ Peace & Blessings ~

I hope that you have access to research material; like a Bible w/Strong's notations, and a Strong's concordance, a dictionary printed on or before 1950 would be a great help also. That would make it a lot easier for you to research the Bible. You see, God tells us to study His word. That means verse upon verse, precept upon precept, here a little, there a little. This does take time, but like my grandmother always said, there is not time like the present. But if you do not have any research material then some have even prayed for guidance and then opened their Bibles and began to read at the first verse that their eyes fell upon. It seems haphazard, but it does work for some, I thank it has more to do with faith in God then coincidence. Another way to know if you are doing the will of God is, are you obeying everything you know that God wants you to do, or not, I do not mean what you heard the preacher say, you can not really trust them these days, but what you have read and studied for your self. I hope that I have been of some help.

One can ask mercy. One can not presume. God isn't unsuitable. The needs of an immortal being don't have anything to do with our desires. That is why that is the veil if tears. The global Was Not Created For Us. Even within the Bible that's rather undeniable within the booklet of Genesis. Mankind was once an afterthought. God wanted someone to percentage with. Have you ever performed a special factor and appeared round to exhibit it off and been by myself? Hence our life.

Key-point to receive the blessings of God___ is to become God’s dependent by all means____ through prayers_____ and patience ____ and trust in God.
God helps and guides aright to those who ask God for God’s help and guidance.
The people who do not believe God and lead a lustful life____ are always mislead to disaster.
Here is God’s taught prayer for those who want to secure the blessings of God in true sense.
PRAYER
By the leave of God,
the Beneficent,
the Merciful.
Praise be to God,
Lord of the worlds.
The Beneficent, the Merciful.
Owner of the each and the ultimate
Day of Judgement.
O’ Lord!
You alone, we worship;
You alone, we ask for help.
Show us always, the right way,
In each and every matter.
The way of those,
Whom You have blessed;
Not the way of those,
Who earn Your anger,
Nor of those who go astray.
Aameen!
By the grace of God you'll find Gods help near at hand. Just have patience and trust in God, no matter how bad the times get Gods help surely comes and God is sufficent is for Gods bondsmen in the hours of trial, provided that we are dependant on God only for everything and not looking upto to any other helper or saviour, as making a saviour besides God is an unpardonable crime. Just hang onto God and God will help you with a strong help.amen.

I don't know if you already do this, but you could start by using his name (Jehovah) when you pray to him. The model prayer in Matthew is a guide to show you some of the things that are proper to pray for. You'll notice that the most important things are first - the sanctification of his name and his kingdom being established on earth as it is in heaven. So matters of importance to God should come first in our prayers. You can then get into your personal concerns. According to 1 John 5:14, "No matter what it is that we ask according to his will, he hears us." Its proper to ask for holy spirit so that we can be helped to do what is right. You can also ask for wisdom, discernment and guideance in making decisions, strength for coping with problems and difficult situations, etc. You can also include other people - family and friends. According to Ps. 62:8, we should pour out our hearts to God. You should also remember, as you may already know, to pray to God THROUGH Jesus' name. That way you're acknowledging Jesus' role as savior in God's purpose.
Hope this helps.

Making a decision and then asking God for confirmation is a legitimate thing to do. If you have made a wrong decision He can tell you.
Also, sometimes God has already prepared you for the decisions you are going to make.
Actually, I recently heard a talk on this subject. You might like it:

2. The more you know about what someone wants, the better you will be able to serve them or please them correct?
