Let's face it, with a 66% divorce rate in this nation, and of those, 20% are admittedly unhappy, marriage is thankfully becoming a thing of the past. Yet millions continue to throw away their dreams and goals, and trap themselves. Why? The answer is quite simple: Money. There are literally BILLIONS to be made off of foolish people. We are all born with the impression that "You are going to be miserable unless you marry someone." This is often said by the parents, whom are either miserable, or divorced themselves, wanting what they think is the best for their children. The media, fueled by dollars, pushes the wife, husband and three kids’ image daily upon everyone using TV, radio, internet, even respectable newspapers engage in this propaganda. The "marriage industry" has (as I said earlier) billions at stake. The TRUTH is: you are your own person. Marriage is (in this modern day) a defunct, un useful, and in some cases, a brutal way of oppression against ones dreams, desires, wishes, hopes, and free wills.

You can, and you are right on track about the trust thing. That is not to say that something good can come from it as well. But I would say to be very cautious and protect yourself until you know the person very well .
it can be a wonderful experience or it can be your worst nightmare. Just keep your head and use it wisely and you should be fine.
And you are correct it is an important decision, but as you communicate with people, you learn what they are all about, and don't take everything at face value.

Not very realistic. After all it's only supposed to be "chatting". People can't even be trusted to make correct choices interacting in real life. So what you hear and what is rational are not even close. Serious relationships take time. Not a fly by night heart throbbing fling.

It can happen, but I think so many people are dishonest online, I would advise you to be extremely careful. If you sign up for a service where people have to pay and provide a picture and all that it seems more likely you could find some trustworthy candidates. But do legitimate catches search for love online? I'm dubious.

It's possible to end up with someone you've met online.
I had gotten to know someone I met in a game of HALO! We met and we hit it off. We were together for a few months but it had to end because he was moving away and our lives were going in different directions. We're still friends though.
Getting to know someone online is just another way of getting to know someone. There's no rule in the book that says we HAVE to get to know someone in person. There's the phone, internet, mail, etc.
I know many couples who met online and by snail mail and have been married for decades. It's cute. Hey, if it's meant to be, it's meant to be!!!
