I don't realize that I do it, but it bugs the heck out of here. Usually its one of my legs, but it can be other things too. Am I cursed to never be able to sleep with my girlfriend?

No, it's a little weird but hey, if she's still with you then it's a-ok.

OMG my boyfriend does the exact same thing.

I think it's just something he's always done and I'm the only one who's ever noticed because I'm the only one who'd take naps with him.

According to this website http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_090.html...

Twitches while falling asleep are called hypnagogic myoclonus, myoclonus being any sort of involuntary muscle spasm and hypnagogic referring to sleep. The twitches occur during very light sleep as the conscious brain gradually relinquishes control of the motor functions. Often they're accompanied by a sense of falling, or the feeling that something is flowing through the body, and sometimes people will experience vivid dreams or hallucinations.

It's not known exactly what causes the twitches, but they appear to be associated (although by no means invariably) with (a) anxiety and (b) some faint stimulus, such as a noise. The twitches have been induced in test subjects who were instructed to push a button whenever they heard a low tone. When, as usually happened, the subjects nodded off after a while--you know how exciting psychology experiments are--the tone would often cause a subject to twitch after a lag of a few seconds.

I think this website is better: http://www.sleepdisorderchannel.com/stages/ ... as it explains why we may twitch after already being asleep for a while.

Stage 5, REM
REM sleep is distinguishable from NREM sleep by changes in physiological states, including its characteristic rapid eye movements. However, polysomnograms show wave patterns in REM to be similar to Stage 1 sleep. In normal sleep (in people without disorders of sleep-wake patterns or REM behavior disorder), heart rate and respiration speed up and become erratic, while the face, fingers, and legs may twitch. Intense dreaming occurs during REM sleep as a result of heightened cerebral activity, but paralysis occurs simultaneously in the major voluntary muscle groups, including the submental muscles (muscles of the chin and neck). Because REM is a mixture of encephalic (brain) states of excitement and muscular immobility, it is sometimes called paradoxical sleep. It is generally thought that REM-associated muscle paralysis is meant to keep the body from acting out the dreams that occur during this intensely cerebral stage.

I hope that helped! It sure helped ME! : }

It's completly normal!! My fiance does this all the time, sometimes its more than a little twitch, sometimes he will kick his whole leg up in his sleep. It used to bother and even annoy me when I was trying to sleep, but we've been living together for 3 years now and it doesnt bother me anymore. I actually dont even notice as much.
Your girl is just going to have to get over it, cause you cant really help what you do in your sleep, Lol.
Good luck : )

hmmm i would call that nerves....especially if you guys dont sleep together often. when people start to fall asleep, random muscles in thier body will twitch because they are releasing tension..and if you only do it when your with her, you could be more tense than usual around her.

maybe your just nervous...try relaxing a little bit and the nerves might go away..maybe your just not comfortable with her yet to "sleep" with her.
