I am picking up a 7 week old German Shepherd puppy from the breeder next weekend. She has been weaning the pups off their mothers milk, but when i went up i noticed they were wearing the food...lol. The pups stunk like normal messy puppies do, is it safe to bath the pup at that age?....i also have a smaller older dog that will have to get used to him, and am thinking about bathing him after i bring him home so he doesn't smell up the house?.....?

the breeder will likely bathe him before you come.. I don't know of a reputable breeder that would send one away stinky..
However, if the breeder doesn't, then you can bathe him quickly with warm water and pure castile soap (Nutrogena)..
Be sure the room is extra warm, and dry him thoroughly, as quickly as you can..Don't stress, but keep it fun and upbeat..

You're breeder should be able to answer that question. And she should be able to recommend a good shampoo to use on puppies as well!

A mild shampoo formulated for puppies should work well. Baby shampoo will do, but it doesn't work for long...it just isn't powerful enough to combat dog odor. I recommend that you bath him in a bath tub so you can control the temperature and depth. Lukewarm, shallow water. Remember, your puppy has never experienced this much water before. Gently towel dry and make sure to get the bare underbelly. Leaving it wet will cause extreme body heat loss.

But consider the puppy's point of view. Moving to a new home away from his mom and siblings is stressful. Then, being dunked in a strange warm fluid by a stranger is even more traumatizing. Ask if the breeder could bath your puppy before you pick him up. That way, he can recover from one new experience before entering the next one. And he'll be all nice and pretty for you.

I hope this helps. Congrats on your puppy! German Shepherds can make fantastic companions.

You should really get it a 9 weeks old that is way to early for a dog. You should also get a personal trainer so then he/she can train your puppy in its own environment, I would wait on the bath so it doesn't spook it when you first bring it home, and get lots chew toys and follow the instructions on the food. You should sleep with it on the first night. You should put it in a room with a door and do not put it in any cardboard box unless it is a crate but that's once it gets 1 month old, potty train it.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT let it outside for walks on the street until it gets all its shots or let it sniff stool or it will get a virus.

sponge bathe the puppy with a warm (not hot or cold) wet washcloth. if you must wash it, fill a sink with very little water and make sure that the puppy's face does not go into the water. I also would not recommend using soap as it could get into his eyes.

I wouldn't wash it at all within the first week or two of the puppy being home. It wouldn't be a very nice introduction to his new home.

Yeah you could. It's best not to, but I can understand. Just make sure the dog is dried well and has been dry at least an hr before taking him out if you live in a cold climate. Use a gentle shampoo for puppies like Lambert Kay's tearless puppy shampoo.

A baby shampoo is a good alternative. There are also puppy shampoos available from pet stores. It would be a good idea to start bathing him now so he gets used to it and i am very familiar with the messy puppy smell so i would bath him too :-p .

The things with getting a new dog with already having a dog is the compatibility of the dog you already have. The procedure to this is by having your old dog meet the new dog to see its reaction. Then you can decide from there on about what you want to do.

As for bathing the puppy if you do get it, it's best if you sponge bathe him in case for drowning or anything.

Good luck!

Yes, just don't use any kind of chemicals w/o talking to a vet. Just use shampoo, baby shampoo to be on the safe side.
