Up to recently, my household had 5 makes of mobile phone, not one that can share a charger, usb or headphone.
We decided to use one make only to eliminate the clutter.

I suppose this applies to gaming consoles as well (eg: SP2 cannot save SP1 games and cannot use SP1 memory card. Console gamepads are incompatable with PCs)

Well, they make lots of money out of accessories. Even to the extent that my Orannge SPV500 phone charger has a standard mini USB connector, but there is an exchange of credientials between the charger and the phone so that only the correct charger will charge the phone.
