You're absolutely correct, alcohol is bad for health when in excess, and tobacco is good for noone. The cost for treating a disease or medical problem is astronomical compared to preventive strategies. The problem is that people want to smoke and drink in excess, which, by-the-way is fine, but the question becomes "who should pay for the consequences?". Unfortunately, everyone who has insurance pays in the form of high premiums.

As long as they can tax it, their going to look the other way on health and the environment. Unfortunately, healthy nonsmoking adult are burdened with the high costs of medical insurance due to the expenses of tobacco related illnesses. Fair? No. But, it's never going to change.

I keep petitioning for universal health care in the USA, but the insurance companies have lobbyests.

In a democratic society, we let people make their own choices- good or bad.
We do not let the government tell us what we can and cannot do- to an extent.
