Please understand that the phrase 'Son of God' is a title and not literal. WE ARE CREATED IN THE IMAGE OF THE HOLY TRINITY. Even Genesis says, "...let us make man in our image..." This is a mysterious thing 3 in 1 and can be better understood by asking, "How are we created in God's image?" The answer is in knowing the essence and existence of man and God.
HOLY TRINITY is: A term used since A.D. 200 to denote the central doctrine of the Christian religion. God, who is one and unique in his infinite substance or nature, is three really distinct persons, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The one and only God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Yet God the Father is not God the Son, but generates the Son eternally, as the Son is eternally begotten. The Holy Spirit is neither the Father nor the Son, but a distinct person having his divine nature from the Father and Son by eternal procession. The three divine persons are co-equal, co-eternal, and consubstantial and deserve co-equal glory and adoration.
We need to know how we are created in God's image to grasp the concept of the Holy Trinity and I think your question is a good one.
To understand this better chart it out or use a diagram of two triangles of equal proportions like the Star of David. This allows an easier understanding of the relationship between the Essence and Existence of a thing. The words following should be distinguished in the following categories: Physical, Mental, and Spiritual. These three words encompass everything in the Universe and make up the CREATIVE PROCESS to help describe the Creator, creatures, and creation.
God is spirit. He cannot be seen. If you were to examine all the creatures, the CREATOR has made a pattern emerges: angels and demons are intellectual creatures without a body; plants and animals do not have an intellect but a body and mortal soul. IT IS ONLY LIVING, HUMAN, BEINGS, that have a MIND, BODY, and SOUL. Only human beings have all three. Now, living, human, being is the existence of man. Those words describe the essence of man's mind, body, and soul. The Body is living, the Mind makes us human and distinguishing us from animals, and our Soul makes us the being that we become (good or evil).
Now, even Muslims will agree Allah is omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all knowing), and omnipresent (ever present). These words describe the existence of God. So, what is the essence of God? I will hold off answering this question till the end.
Now, if you think about the existence of a person they have a triple existence: physical (body), mental (mind), and spiritual (eternal soul). In fact, whenever we create something it has all three of these parts. When we cook we have a recipe (in our mind), we gather all the raw ingredients, and we cook (don't burn it, ha ha) what it is we are making. Cooking has the physical, mental, and spiritual parts. Same with engineering or technology it has three parts: the blueprints (to convey an idea), the raw materials (physical), and the workmanship (spiritual). If something goes wrong investigators will look for a design flaw, material flaw, or faulty workmanship. THIS DEMONSTRATES CREATION HAS THREE PARTS LIKE THE CREATOR.
Now, in the Bible it says Jesus is the visible likeness of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15) The ESSENCE OF GOD IS: Father (mental), Son (physical), Holy Ghost (spiritual). ONE TRUE GOD IN THREE JUST LIKE A PERSON. THREE PARTS ONE PERSON. When you are sick you send for a doctor; when you are mentally troubled, a psychiatrist; when spiritually seeking you seek out a holy person.

Jesus is not the physical or biological son of God!
He has been depicted as son for three reasons.
He represents God LIKE THE son represents his father.
He was born without any father as a miracle.
Those days it was common that a good man or king was accepted as God. The idea of Son came to his followers as innocent Mary had to be given an excuse for bearing a son.
It was a God sent gift to Mary. God is never referred as Mary's husband.

Well officialy Josef was going to marry that Maria girl, but Maria had a one-night stand with some other carpenter and told Josef that the son was "a gift of god!" Well he loved her and believed it and then little Jesus was born in a cradle under a star and was greeted by 3 wise men. We will never know who the "real" father is but until we do we will say it's that big guy/girl/thing in the sky/space/something.

Ge 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Notice God is talking to Himself in the beginning and that He is plural.
Ps 110:1 The LORD says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”
This is from David whom Chist came from.
JN 8:54 Jesus answered, “ If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’;
JN 8:55 and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word.
JN 8:56 “ Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
JN 8:57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
JN 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
JN 8:59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
Jesus called God his father here making him the Son of God. He also said that he was before Abraham and called himself I am. Jesus is calling himself God by giving himself the title "I am" and saying he existed before he was born.
Ex 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Just showing this title is given to God
Jn 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Jn 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
You should read all the verses inbetween and afterwords, but these verses show the Word (who is Jesus by the context of the word becoming flesh and also verses surrounding these) was in the beginning and was God and came from the Father.
Lk 22:70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”
He (Jesus) replied, “You are right in saying I am.”
Jn 20:28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jn 20:29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Jn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jn 14:7 If you really knew me, you would know MY FATHER as well. From now on, you do know him and HAVE SEEN HIM.”
Jn 14:8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”
Jn 14:9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN ME HAS SEEN THE FATHER. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Jn 14:10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
Jn 14:11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
These verses should answer your question for yourself even though there are more than these. The verses above can be found in most Bibles (NASB, NKJV, KJV, NIV, etc.).

God is ? Christianity has always gone in circles as per the bible.
Its the interpretation that causes the confusion. Mass hysteria is a powerfull thing. The answer to that question will forever be answered in defence instead of with factuallity.
