I have lived in San Diego for about 6 months now. I have had the opportunity to go to quite a few restaurants, but many seem to disappoint. And these were suggested by various websites so I'm beginning to think the dining experience in this gorgeous city isn't very spectacular. Anyhow, let me know what you think. I love trying out new places. Also, some great suggestions on ethnic dining would be awesome too.

My more upscale favorites are:

La Paloma - Vista - Mexican
Tapenade - La Jolla - French
California Cuisine - Hillcrest - California
Pacifica - Del Mar - Seafood
NINE-TEN - La Jolla - California
Laurel - San Diego - California

My favorite mid-tier and affordable restaurants are:

Chart House - Seafood - Solana Beach
Hodad's - Hamburgers - Ocean Beach
Leucadia's Pizzeria - Pizza - La Jolla or Encinitas
El Callejon - Mexican - Encinitas
L&L's - Hawaiian - Oceanside, Mira Mesa, and other locations

My favorite ethnic restaurants are:

Jasmine - Chinese/Dim Sum - Clairemont Mesa
Emerald Seafood Restaurant - Chinese/Dim Sum - Clairemont Mesa
Todai - Sushi Buffet - Mission Valley
Japengo - Sushi - La Jolla
Sushi Ota - Sushi - Pacific Beach

That's all I can think of for now. There are a lot of terrific restaurants in San Diego, don't get discouraged. I agree with you that there are lots of overrated ones, too. But I guarantee that you'll find a few that you'll love. There are just so many choices for so many tastes here. Happy eating!

Ya gotta go to Hoboken Pizza on Pacific.
When the owner moved to San Diego from the east coast , he said they didn't know what pizza was out there. He started his own ,very popular, shop.
