I wrote a similar question and got jack-*** answers, if you feel the need to do that, don't answer at all.

Whats happens if I don't get car insurance?
I have a speeding ticket on my license, I'm about to go to court for another speeding ticket (19 over) and a reckless driving ticket (for burning tires). I am 18, with a Nissan 300zx (2 seater sports car)

I was thinking, what if I don't renew my insurance? Will I just get a $200 ticket when I get pulled over for it? $200 ticket >>> $300 a month for insurance

I personally think the insurance system is very faulty since insurance companies are making lots of money. If it was a service where the profits went to roads and such, I wouldn't mind a bit.

What is the penalty for not having insurance, costs/tickets/fines?

No smartass comments please, just asking a question, I highly doubt I will drop insurance, as I pay it every 6 months anyways. Just wondering

If you don't get insurance, and you are pulled over for any reason, you will be cited. If you hit someone and it is your fault, you will be liable for the damages to their car, and any injury to the person, and since you don't have insurance you will be required to pay it. If you can't pay it, there's a good chance you will be sued by the other driver's insurance company, as well as potentially being in line for a civil suit. If your own car is damaged, you will have to pay for that as well. If you rack up enough points through all of this (and it sounds like you already have at least some), you will lose your license. Unless you're independently wealthy and can afford to pay all this out of your own pocket, I'd say insurance is a good investment.

Lastly - when I was 18, I was in a serious accident that was caused by the other driver (she ran a stop sign); I was lucky enough to receive only very minor injuries, but it could just as easily have killed me. Please do yourself and everybody else on the road a favor, and drive responsibly. Now that you're 18, if you hurt someone on the road, you can also be criminally liable, and could end up in jail for a very long time, in addition to taking away someone's life and livelihood. Think about what would happen if you hit someone tomorrow, and ended up in jail for 30 years. You'd be (at least) 48 or 50 before you got out - a definite waste of a life. Could you live with the knowledge that you killed a mother, or a father, or a child?

The choice is yours. Good luck.

Well what if you hit someone and cause damage to them or their vehicle and they can't get paid and they sue you? Do you have an issue with getting a judgment against you and having your wages garnished until that judgment is paid?

Not to be a jack ** but this is the problem with people who don't see the need for insurance- it's always the fact that the worst thing that can happen is they get a ticket. But the worst thing that can happen to you is you have an accident and it's serious. No, I take that back- the worst thing is you hit someone who has almost no damage and isn't really hurt and they make up some crazy injury claim and even though you don't believe it for a minute, you have no one in your corner to handle this for you because you didn't understand why you paid your premium. You have to get your own expensive attorney, when there's a built in allowance for one if you get sued in your insurance policy.

I work in the business, I get that it's a necessary evil and people put us on their hate list just below attorneys. However, I have seen bad stuff happen and had to tell people we were going to go after them and probably sue them and gee, I hope you don't own any property or have a great 401k plan with your employer, because we'll find out and you'll have a big problem. Don't be that guy (I mean that in a gender neutral way) that has to take that call. And you don't want a judgment against you because it's bad for your credit!

Even though I understand your reasoning, don't do it.

Ok- im gonna try not to be a smartass here-

I know people believe they are invincible and will never get in an accident but, fact of that matter is- we all do eventually.

If you get in an accident while you are not covered by insurance- (lets say for your case it is minor and there are no injuries) and the other company finds you at fault- they will personally send you a bill for their drivers repairs and rental bill. (and if they claim an injury- were talking thousands upon thousands more.)

Unless you are prepared to pay their bill (as well as deal with a potentially suspended license) or have that debt hanging over your head and have to pay off someone elses car for years of your lifetime- do yourself a favor and get atleast SOME insurance

(California) I have a civic. I got a speeding ticket and had no insurance or registration. It was about 250 dollars. The highway patrol was going to charge me 2,000-5,000 for not having insurance and no registration. But I paid for insurance and got my car registered, went to court and they let those major fines go. Afterward I didn't want to pay for insurance so i canceled it for 55 dollars ... It's risky if u get pulled over again but u don't have to pay on the premium every month.

In answerer to tour question of what happens if I don't get car insurance? the answered is vehicle registration and insurance mandating are part of a federal regulation overseeing local government. If you don't get vehicle registration and insurance in addition to fines the worse case scenario is that a police official will arrest you and a judicial official can convict you of a city administrative code violation in addition to a criminal felony penalty and you risk spend in several years in jail so don't drive with out insurance please I Know I am a New York City Supreme Court Officer Retired.

I don't know about the states but in Canada if you are caught driving without insurance you can be fined. LIke a ticket. You can still drive but I believe the authorities have the right to fine you every time they catch you. I would imagine too the bi-laws would vary in each state just as it would here from province to province.
