Tongue Rings > What should i do about my swollen tongue ring?
Even if you have taken perfect care of your tongue ring piercing and followed your piercer's aftercare instructions to the letter, you may still develop an infection.

Ordinarily, you may experience a swollen tongue ring piercing for the first 3-5 days. During that time, you may also notice that the piercing has a bit of clear, watery discharge, and even some very mild bleeding. Normally, the bleeding will stop within the first 24 hours of the initial piercing, however, the discharge may continue for several days or even weeks more. Keep in mind, this discharge is normal and actually serves to help prevention an infection of the wound.

Having said that, if your situation is unique from the above, and you are still experiencing swelling and/or bleeding and discharge outside of the normal scope outlined above, you should remove the piercing and see a qualified health care provider immediately. Possible infections are NOT something you want to take a chance with. In extreme cases, an infected tongue left to long can actually cause the person to have to have it surgically removed to prevent spread of the infection!

You need to see a doctor immediately if you have:

Difficulty breathing or wheezing after your piercing, or a feeling that your mouth or throat are swelling closed. Seek emergency attention immediately!
Hives, redness, itching and irritation around the piercing, which may signal an allergic reaction to the piercing jewelry. Your piercing professional can try replacing it with an alternative metal (try titanium or 14k gold).
Inflammation that lasts longer than a few days, with redness and irritation. See your piercing professional or doctor.
Discharge that becomes noticeably thicker and is yellow or green in color. This is a sign or infection and should be checked by a qualified health care professional.
Any other sign that you are having a possibly severe reaction to the piercing -go see a doctor immediately!
It can no be stressed enough the importance of proper aftercare and maintenance of your tongue piercing. Having said that, your health is always more important than your body art - keep your priorities straight!

Your tongue usually is the only part of your body that heals really fast, so if you got it done 3 weeks ago...seems like you have a real problem. It should have been completely healed by now. If you are too afraid to turn to your parents (they will help you), you should at least go back to the piercer and have him/her take a look at it...they should know whether you are experiencing an infection or just some severe scar tissue (keloids). If it is severe scarring sounds to me like you should probably take it out.
Honestly, if I were you I would not even leave it in. I know you really want it in, but you could be risking some severe infection. That's not very cool....

Don't use mouth wash, it's too harsh for newly a pierced tongue.
If it doesn't clear up within a few days then you better go get it checked out. If you can't do that then you better take it out. Do not let the infection spread though if you do think it is infected. It could cause more damgae than just taking it out.

You need to go to the doctor. A person can loose their tongue with a bad enough infection. I would swish with peroxide three times daily for a few days, and if it doesn't get better, get to the MD. Suck it up and tell your parents. Its better than losing your tongue.

your tounge is infected, it's what we call a stage 2 infection, the "white stuff" is puss, signaling excessive bacteria. the red is normal and will clot in time, unless you have hemophelia, if you do RUN don't walk to the nearest surgeon. clean your tounge multiple times daily with hydrogen peroxide, alcohol 91% isoproyl.
and for s - hit's sake take that damn ring out of your mouth!!! it's not worth a speech impediment, chances are the bolt wasn't properly sterilized before induction. take aspirin for the pain that's going to come and take a medical 101 course, you'll save yourself a lot of worry. other than that you;ll be fine.

You should go to the doctor. This is a cause for concern because it is running for 3 weeks already. Self-medication is not advisable and it might turn the condition from bad to worse. If you will not go to the doctor, the infection might spread to surrounding areas like your mouth, uvula, or even tonsils.

it's either infected or you're reacting to the metal, meaning you're allergic. take it out. and gargle with salt water and lemon juice
