yes, but...

a. some stores will not accept it (e.g. rental cars)

b. you have to be really careful when giving away your debit card on the net. in case of fraud charges, with a credit card you have the 'grace period' of the bank before you really feel the problems and you can use the time to try and dispute and fix the problems. With debit card the money goes out of your checking account immediately and you may find yourself without a dime.

Debit card-if you use only amount which you have in your SCA (special card account).
Credit card- you can use both amount in your account + bank's credit line.
My recommendation - it is better to have DEBIT card for web payments. You will put into your account as much money as you want to make transaction. It is for your own SAFETY

Depends on the country.

In the U.S.
Debit cards with either a MasterCard or Visa symbol can be used on line. You do have protection. Visa and MasterCard zero liability protection and the EFTA.

In other countries
Some Maestro and Visa electron can be run as Visa, Solo or MasterCard. In some cases a Visa electron can be run as a visa delta or a Maestro card

NO NO NO Don't put debit card numbers on the web!
It is like a blank check. Canceling your card won't stop charges. You will be in trouble like writing a bad check if you close the bank account and they still use your numbers.
