I have to agree with the others - they mostly just add color. They are non-toxic to most organsims. However, the waxes and some of the pigments are derived from petroleum distallates. The wrappers and box use paper and cardboard. So, crayons contribute to the problems cuased by oil and wood consumptions. But, the volume of materials used for crayons seems pretty small.

I am completely against medicating children. There are certain circumstances where medicating is a good solution, however for the most part I think there are far better strategies. People are too quick to medicate these days because they think that pills are the "quick fix". I'm sure you don't want your son to rely on pills just to have decent behavior! Sounds like he needs to work on strategies for control. Whether that be when he's upset, when he's excited, or when he's asked to do something. He's young and likely strives for attention, perhaps that's why he is well behaved with you and not at school. It very well could be the teacher, odd that he has had two that are the same. I suggest talking with the teacher about her strategies. You want to try and keep as much consistence in his life as possible. So when he doesn't listen at home he gets a consequence, and when he doesn't listen at school he gets a consequence. Reinforce the good behavior a lot (even just verbal praise helps a lot) especially at first, so he feels motivated to be a good listener. Maybe talk to the teacher about having a quiet place in the classroom where if he needs to go calm his body down he can go to that place, calm down, and then return to the activity. He needs to learn strategies to keep his body calm and controlled when necessary. For some children that does not come easily. Especially if they are a child with lots of energy. There is also professional help you can seek, behavioral therapists may be of help to you, perhaps an occupational therapist if you suspect there is some underlying issue. I do strongly suggest trying some other things before rushing to medicate your son. I hope this helps.

Actually, if people tried hard enough, crayon's wouldn't do anything to the enviroment at all.
The wax can be converted to candles and the wrapper can be recycled. So if there was a special "Crayon Deposit" recycle bin, they wouldn't do anything.
However, they harm species whose systems cannot take wax. Sometimes the wax builds up in their system and takes them out. Sometimes, it even blows an appendix up.
