how do you find a good tattoo artist in one's area, where to look?

we found our tattoo artist when we saw someone who had GREAT work and asked them where they got it done at. it may take some searching. you could always look up all of the tattoo shops in your area and go to each one and look at the portfolios. or, if you really want a great custom tattoo you may have to travel a little bit to get to them. every city doesn't always have a great tattoo artist. good luck with finding one!

I hope this is a troll question, because if it's not, you are really NOT the person to be having kids let alone parenting them, judging by this question. When I was 6, the thought of a tattoo never crossed my mind, however I did admire the beauty of them whenever I saw them on someone. When I first found out about the pain of a tattoo, that really scared me, to the point where whenever I saw someone with one, I thought they were a tough broad (this was when I was a child). Even as a 6 year old, I knew they were a permanent decision, though I found out about laser removal later down the road (and people say that hurts FAR worse than a tattoo). The kid is going to change her mind, have new interest as she ages (she may like ponies but chances are, it will be something else later on), and regret has no age limit. Remember that, plus can you imagine a 6 year old getting a tattoo?! Kids normally hate shots when they're at the doctor's office, imagine 4-5 needles jamming ink into your child's skin, 3,000 times a minute! Besides, I am currently getting a tattoo on my wrist next month for my 18th birthday and I wanted it since I was 14. My mother promised me she will never sign for me to get a tattoo and if I did, I will be old enough to sign for it on my own terms. What do you know?! I'm signing for it next month, my mom sure wasn't playing around!

If you have friends that can recommend a shop that would be a start - If not, visit a local tattoo artist and look at their portfolios. Many cities also have a tattoo convention which artists come from all over the world.

check your phone book under tattoos/ peircing, although you wont really know how good an artis is at a certain style untill you see some of his tats, get some numbers for some parlors call and ask if the have a website that has customer picture which is importat because a tattoo might not come out as good as its drawn on paper its alot different, most shops have photo albums for each artist, and each artis speaializes in a certain stye, also i reccomend that you dot get a stencil/flash offline because i feel its unoriginal and i never really wanna see my tattoo on ne one else because i drew it its a personal thing, so thats my advice hope it helps

Ask around.
Word of mouth is the best recommendation for tattoo artists/shops.

best thing is to keep an eye out for a guy with a kickass tatoo, then when you find that guy, ask him where he did it, hopefully its somewhere in the area.. i guess thats the best way to find a good artist by looking at his work

good question! my first 4 tats i went to the same guy, it was outside of LA so it was the same guy that did travis's tats, from blink 182...but i moved, and had a new company do my last one. i looked at people that had tats, and asked them where they got them. if you are satisified with what you see, you know what to expect, that's the best way. and word of mouth in your area.
