Its a sad story, but are you saying thaat you would have preferred the other die. It is not a question of men or women, it is a question of experience. If there was a tall place that needed to be fixed, getting a tall person would not be discriminating against short people. I think that it is a sad story, and sacreifce would have to be made, considering the situation.

The mother was breast feeding the children so she could not have gone without taking the kids with her. Clearly that was not an option. In any case, neither one of them should have gone. The temperature was far too cold for them to be venturing out. They were not wearing anywhere near adequate clothing. People who know anything about survival are aware that the main things needed are food, water and protection from the elements. The car was the safest place to be. Snow could be melted for water, so that was not an issue. There were grubs, berries and plant life to feed on as well as twigs and things to build traps and catch small animals (springs and car parts would have also helped to build these). They had two lighters and it was a wooded area so dry wood could be found somewhere with a little searching to build a fire (plus there was flammable fluids under the hood of the car to ignite. They could have pulled the insulation from the seats for extra warmth. Clearly, the family would have a search party out and it would only be a matter of time before they were found. There were many things they could have done such as climb a tree and put that reflective taped umbrella they had on the top of it to possibly alert a the search helicopters. The worst thing to do is to leave your source of shelter or leave the road. Hypothermia can set in in just five hours.

That is a good question. It goes back to the old days where traditionally the man went and did the dangerous stuff and the woman stayed and looked after the young, it had to be that way because of the fact that there is no other sex that can have children coupled with the fact that women were not as educated as men.

back then it was a mans world and they did all the things that could clam their lives.

could the mother have survived where the father didn't? I really don't know, mother's need to protect her young?

AN interesting point.

If the woman had gone for help, the children would have died. She was their food-supply. In that way it is very logical that the man went for help. Also because men are often stronger and better in tracking their way. A man that stayed would feel guilty that he isn't helping his wife out. And a woman would go crazy because she thinks about her children, and she'll ask herself if they're still ok, she'd go back, or she'd at least not have the clearness of spirit to make a track to her hiding-place. They really did all they could. I think it very brave of that man to go for help. If he hadn't he might still be alive, but if anything went wrong in that scenario, he'd keep on blaming himself for not running for help. Those people are going through a hard time and are asking themselves 'what if'. . They did the only thing they could.

Actually the situation would have been worse. The entire thing was a tragedy overall. I feel so bad for that family, but while the husband went off, the wife breast fed the children to provide food and nourishment. The man would not have been able to do that. He was an amazing man, untill the end, he kept leaving notes to rescuers saying his family needed help. I hope they will all be ok, and get alot of support from friends and family.

Well,
because sometimes men, are men, and they risk thier lives to provide for there family. Really what the whole family should have done was just wait togather in the car. But, No why would sending the women make any difference? I mean if she died and left the husband and kids, James Kim would feel awful, think about it. not to mention James Kim loved his Wife and children, he sacrificed himself for them.

No the mother would have probably perished sooner it is a mans nature to go first to protect or seek help for his family he had to be very strong and determined to get as far as he did. He left his wife and children in the protection of the car and where his wife could feed both this is not something he could have done and then the kids would have died also. Pray for his family as they struggle to go on without him that is where my concern is right now not on what ifs God bless you

The guy just walked in the wrong direction. If he went in the other direction he would have reached a lodge a mile away. The road he took was filled with forks that went nowhere and they found him somewhat close to a main road. If the woman went out and went the same way I don't think the outcome would have been any different. Check the map for reference.

men are stronger physically.
but no matter what, it is a sad outcome and i'm glad the whole family did not perish.
james kim died due to his devotion for his family, his wife and kids.
to me that is very noble as a father and husband he has fullfilled his duties.
right now, i hope the wife, Kati and the children, Penelope and Sabinie will continue to live on. May god bless them.
And may James Kim rest in peace.

Did they find the car first?
No one had to die if they all just stayed in the car. Not to be sexist, but why does a man feel the need to go and do something? Woman have a wait-and-see attitude and men have the git-r-done attitude. The mother probably argued with him not to go. In the end, who was right? Not the type for arguement I would like to win.
